OT- King's X

I don't know why I haven't gotten into this band, but hearing some of you mention King's X the other day made me want to listen to some of their stuff. So, what are some of the top King's X songs that you guys would suggest I check out?

Kings X is a Great Band! I really enjoy everything from "Ear Candy" back. The early albums are melodic rock masterpieces!!!

Ear Candy has some cool stuff on it as does Faith Hope Love. Kings X is like Prince- There are moments of greatness on their albums, but not everything is great. Still, explore them. They are worth a look.

The funny thing with KX fans is that we tend to unanimously agree their best period encompasses the first few albums, from Out Of The Silent Planet through Dogman. In between, you've got Gretchen Goes To Nebraska, Faith Hope Love and King's X. You may want to start with either Gretchen or King's X. Those albums are just about perfect. GGtN has "Send A Message," "Summerland," and "Over My Head" (they made a great video for that one) which you may have already heard, and King's X has "The World Around Me," "Black Flag" (video), "Ooh Song" and "Lost In Germany"—all songs with great hooks. If you don't like what you hear (and I don't think that'll be the case) from either of these albums, you'll never get into King's X.

Okay, I will definitely do that. I was listening to the boneyard on XM radio yesterday and they were playing a King's X song (can't remember what it was though) and thought to myself, "I need to find out why I never bothered with this band before." I will definitely checkout those albums.

You DEFINITELY need to check out albums like Gretchen, Faith and even their last release (I think) Ogre Tunes.
Beautiful vocal harmonies, great guitar riffs/tones and Doug Pinnick has an incredible Bass tone...
He makes that guitar sound like it is literally breathing.

Seems like when Grunge rolled around, a lot of bands took the opportunity to yank the harmonies from their tracks. Extreme and Kings X both did this. Too bad, that's one of the things I loved about them in the beginning.

The album I started with was Faith Hope Love. Then got Gretchen, Out of The Silent Planet, Dogman. Haven't listened to them in a while but they are pretty good.

That's a great track and just recently added to my favorites list. "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska", "Faith, Hope, Love", and "King's X" are all decent albums.

I downloaded Over My Head and Black Flag. Both of those songs are pretty cool songs. I definitely think this is a band I can get into and I appreciate all of you giving me advice on which are the best albums to get.

I just totally ran into "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" at a record store today for $10. I got it along with "Raised on Radio" and Porcupine Tree's newest....

I've kinda been into King's X for awhile. They have some really catchy, cool songs.

Nah, Porcupine Tree is the project of a man by the name of Steven Wilson. He's my favorite Steve in the music business, bar none.

There's really no way to describe Porcupine Tree other than "must-listen." They perform everything from atmospheric soundscapes to grinding metal riffs, and usually both in the same song! Lush layers of thick sound, wistful and melodic vocal harmonies, and introspective lyrical voyages..... they're probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite band right now.

Everyone should do themselves a favor and check out these albums:

Fear of a Blank Planet (2007) [The track "Anesthetize" features Alex Lifeson]
Deadwing (2005)
In Absentia (2003) [Their best in my opinion]
Lightbulb Sun (2001)

Their earlier stuff than this was more psychedelic, great material but these four would most appeal to a MR fanbase. GREAT music!

I'd most compare Porcupine Tree to what happens if Pink Floyd has sex with Dream Theater while Tool videotapes it and modern Toto sprays them all down afterwards.

Man, I have just been through a MAJOR buy everything Porcupine Tree spree. They are without a doubt, bar none, the best new find in music I have ever heard. I pretty much like all their stuff and it can vary quite a bit but Steven Wilson is pure genius. This music takes a while to sink in but once it does look out!

By the way, I'd add Stupid Dream to your list. It's right up their with the others you mentioned.

I can't rank Stupid Dream because I haven't listened to it as a whole yet, just various tracks....

....that said, I'm in love with "Piano Lessons."

Any other PT fans out there? I'm gonna go see them live in Cleveland next week, I'm friggin' PUMPED.
