OT: New Rush album debuts at #3

Even if you're not a Rush fan, you'd have to be kinda happy that a classic band like this can still light up the charts. This isn't the "rock albums", "contemporary adult", or other minor charts. This is the big kahuna.

That's great. I like Rush. Some albums anyway. This new one is pretty good.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Reading shit like this makes me want to flip-flop as far as Perry goes. He could get together with the fuckin' Wu-Tang Clan and make better music than Rush. Fuck Rush.

Hearing Winds of Freedom gives me hope of maybe Journey could do something simular....I can hear the song being played on the radio....The first one in quite awhile.....Maybe since Remember Me.....

Good for RUSH..I'm happy for them..they deserve it!

I wasn't crazy about their last release, Vapor Trails...but they say this NEW one is pretty good..I'll have to check it out.

"Vapor Trails" would probably be much better if it weren't for the terrible production. Worse than either "Generations" or "Red 13", in my opinion.

I thought that the production on VAPOR TRAILS was okay, but I couldn't stand the fact that there were no guitar solos from Alex Lifeson. I don't know why the hell he decided to do that.

The same with Metallica's ST ANGER. No guitar solos. Unbelievable.

I got the new RUSH release, and I think it's good. (I've been a fan since POWER WINDOWS, and I love all the old stuff and some of the new stuff). I didn't go crazy for it on the first listen, but it's growing on me. Most of Rush's music has to grow on me... I never love it at the beginning, but I usually end up loving it over time. This new one is a little dark sounding to me... very guitar heavy... sounds like maybe Lifeson is using his guitars tuned a bit lower... I don't like it when he does that. Plus, I've noticed that there's not much melody in Geddy's voice on this one. It must be difficult for him to come up with melodies when Peart is writing the lyrics. Or it could be that I've been listening to so much melodic rock music lately (Journey/Queen, etc.) that it's jarring to go to Geddy so quickly. I like Geddy's singing, but I don't recall any sing-along choruses on this latest release. So far I like it, but I'm going to have to invest some time in it because it is dense and multi-layered. You can't get the full effect the first time around with Rush. It's like reading an intense novel with lots of symbolism and hidden meanings.

Rush have never been a fashionable band. They have never sold albums on the back of their looks, or dumbed down their music to appeal to a mass audience, and ever since 2112 they've stuck two fingers up to music industry pressure to conform.

Yet they sell albums by the shedload and consistently sell out arenas, so they must be doing something right. They also produce original music and keep pushing themselves. It just proves the lie that quality rock music has had its day.

There is still hope for bands like Journey, IF they can get the right album together, and properly support that album with a good tour.

That is good news, but wait and see what heppens in week #2.

Since the soundscan system was instituted, you routinely see bans like Rush, Iron Maiden, Kiss, etc debut high in the first week when all the hardcore fans run out to get the new CD. Very often the CD drops out of site in the second week.

Not saying that is going to happen here, but a high chart debut does not make the album a big hit or a success. Agreed though it is nice to see it chart high.

Iron Maiden just had their first ever top 10 charting record in the U.S. last September logging in at the #9 position.
