No new wave of anything, no new album or new direction or new sound. We were lied to.

And THIS is why:

I think it was a 3-headed beast...Perry/Friga/Schon and when they cut one of the heads the balance was lost. Similar to what I feel happened with Styx. DeYoung was a balance between the ballads and the rock of JT & Shaw. It was a nice meshing of styles that created some of the best Styx tunes. I think it went too far with Roboto (which I loved anyway) but the same happened when that creative balance went out of whack with ROR.

ROR should have been Street Talk 2...and they should have done Horizons as the next level from Frontiers. When that creative balance is gone you have this mess.

I think we've been fortunate to see a few bands where that balance played a pivotal roll in the success of the band.

Just my $.02

When Perry boxed up his toys and went home, he took Journey's creativity with him. He's the only one with the keys to that box. They are a nostalgia act and happy to be, evidently.

You know, you could compare this to VH. Cherone was a good singer, but did not remind anyone of classic VH. A lot of VH fans were unhappy, and it showed when the record flopped. Maybe Neal and Jon were worried that JSS would have a similar effect? I don't think it is justified, just trying to get in their heads, since Cain said they want to "sound like the 65 million units that are out there."

Wasn't it reported in Dean's Blog that Neal
told Jeff at one point, "This isn't Van Halen!"

Maybe that was a cryptic message to Jeff that,
"Hey, we ain't gonna do an album w/ you
like VH did w/ Cherone... Live it up while you can
."

Makes you wonder, eh?

If Neal said that it was probably part of the spiel in which he was promising Jeff the moon and telling him they weren't afraid to go in a new direction.

If you remember, SOMETHING went on at VA and all of sudden, JSS was off the boards and even gave some of us a "why he's doing it" bit of advice.....

Do you think something was starting then.....

Yeah, maybe he meant we aren't going to do an album with you if YOU want too much input like Cherone seemed to have with VH. Seems that Augeri had trouble getting Schon & Friga to use his ideas when writing as well. Maybe JSS pushed them to hard to try something outside their comfort zone and they didn't like it one bit being that he is the new kid on their block and backed away from their plans.

Seriously makes you wonder if Friga-Fruit-Cake
and that Gin-Blossomed-Rat-Bastard felt threatened
by Jeff's friendships he made here...

I'd say you're hitting pretty close to the mark. I think Jeff had too much of a personal following and they saw him becoming the Star of the Show the way Perry was. Even Augeri had his wigglers for some God only knows reason and that probably bruised Neal's ego too. But then again, maybe Jeff wasn't playing the "See how many ways you can fuck over the fans" game well enough for them.

I think it was alittle of what you said... but much more.

Put it this way, how many of us had M&G chances on this past tour???
Quite a few, I'm willing to guess. And I'm not talking about ILAA.
And out of everyone that had that chance,
how many got that chance solely through Jeff???

What I'm getting at is that Jeff kept grounded
and STILL enjoyed meeting and hanging out with his fans,
many he still regards as friends, cause that's how he is.
I think getting this close to the fans bothered Neal and Jon...
They might have felt 'cornered' into meeting and hanging out with
more fans than they were usually willing to do in the past.

Maybe they didn't trust him enough to keep all the band's dirty laundry
a big secret in the long run... Just guessing 8)
