Great stuff. There's some very tasteful, melodic soloing there as well. Better than most of the other stuff I've heard from him.

If Jason Becker hadn't come down with Lou Gehrig's disease, he'd be right up there with him...

Despite the fact that he can no longer move his arms or legs, the guy still writes music. Amazing...

No, but I do like Cacophony.

They were OK but most of their stuff is a bit over the top for me. Marty Friedman is a heck of a player also. He always said that Becker could play anything but that his improvisational skills needed to be developed. Both guys were/are awesome players. Of course, Deen was the drummer on the second album, so it's interesting for that reason as well.

SF-Dano wrote:Neal is absolutely one of the greats. It all depends what we prefer in our guitar players. Somebody mentioned Jimmy Pager earlier. While Jimmy was never one of the cleanest guitarists, he was a great songwriter and innovative live player for his time.

Some other greats that come to mind that have not been mentioned.

Steve Morse (Can play any style extremely well, highly recognized by his peers if not by the public)
Alex Scolnik (sp?)
Alan Holdsworth
George Lynch

And for their time these guys were awesome (ps. some still hang pretty well today)
Jeff Beck
Ritchie Blackmore
Jimi Hendrix
Frank Marino
Michael Schenker
Randy Rhodes
(the what if factor)
Robin Trower
Ronnie Montrose

There is are alot. Best is an opinion.

PS. If you are going to include Brian May in your list of greats and not Neal Schon you need to check what you been smoking. Talk about not improving one's playing in years. That is Brian May in a nut shell. IMO :)

All the guitar players you mentioned above are great, specially Steve Morse.
The only one of them I find very boring is George Lynch. I saw him open for Yngwie back in 04 and he didnt do anything for me with his Lynch Mob.
Blackmore has always been a great player, but I just can not understand what his Blackmore Night is all about. Its just sad when a guitar player who played Smoke On the Water, plays some folk music with lyrics that sound straigh from 15th century! (" Not that there is anything wrong with it";) )

Wow, I hadn't thought of that duo in years. Freidman and Becker wasn't it? They were awesome and just some young punks back then. It is too bad what happend to Jason. I really enjoyed Friedman's work in Megadeth. Any news on what he is up to now? Kind of lost track of Marty after Megadeth?

He's done several solo albums since he was in Megadeth. A lot of it has been heavily acoustic work and it's very good. I've got 20-25 of his solo tracks. Good stuff.

great disscussions all... really the only reason I brought it up---was before June 16, everyone here loved Neal and DID think he was one of the BEST....but then by June 20 it was like all the sudden---the most hated guy around anywhere.....

My five favorites are Eddie Van Halen, Thorogood, That guy just plays a mean slide guitar, Neal ofcourse, love Biran May and jimmy Page, plus BB king.. old school!!

Hendrix, Beck, Blackmore, Randy Rhodes.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

Yep to me he was, like you said, a good guitarist in a great band.

EVH is one of the best guitarists in the world. Or was. Maybe if he truly is straightened out, he might shine again. I hope.

I never said that model had a maple fretboard. Rosewood was a good choice. It works as a good contrast to the white body.
