OT - Baseball coach killed

Anyone else see this today? Tulsa Drillers first base coach was killed when he was struck in the head by a line drive. They administered CPR on the field but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

A shame, and just a really freak kind of accident.

I just saw that story on the ESPN blog...Guy's last name was Coolbaugh. I remember him playing for the Brewers or Cardinals a few years ago.

This is my hometown team. The coach had only been with the team 3 weeks. He has a wife, two young sons and another baby due in October. It really is a tragedy. It makes a lot of what we get concerned about here pretty trivial in comparison.

We had a tragedy at a game in my over 30 baseball league 2 years ago. A little 4 year old boy was hit in the chest with a stray baseball and died from it. It was just awful.

A total freak accident, and truly the saddest thing I've ever been exposed to. The ball wasn't even thrown all that hard and if it would have been even an inch to either side nothing would have happened.

Yup heard about that Ed. My kids little league complex sells heart protectors just for that reason.

This is really sad and a little too close to home for me. Last Sunday my son was pitching for his legion baseball team and was hit in the temple by a line drive. It broke his temporal bone and made a 4cm fracture in his skull right above it. I knew we were lucky, but after reading this I didn't realize just how lucky we were.

Tina don't pull the over protective mom stuff as a result of it. You still have to live your life, and that does include having your children play sports. There are risks associated with any sport.

You wouldn't believe the outcry for wooden bats right now. I think anything can happen at any time. I'm not on any crusade. Just thankful he's okay and is already wanting to be back on the field.

That is so horribly sad. What a terrible loss for his family. My daughter plays baseball, and I'm always stressing with her how important it is to pay attention in the field for safety reasons. Even the little kids can smack the ball pretty hard. I think next year they start playing with a league ball instead of a softer t-ball, so I'm going to be even more crazed about it.

It is horrible in any sport when someone gets injured or killed, regardless of the circumstances. As well for as the family and friends of the coach, I feel for the guy batting at the time. Although it wasn't his fault, he'll still have to live with the knowledge that his action killed someone.

I can't imagine being the guy who hit the ball, even though it wasn't his fault. I'd be so shaken up, I don't think I'd be able to play for a few days.

In the case with the little boy, it was his dad who threw the ball and it went over his teammates head. The little boy wasn't looking and got hit. To top it off that it happened on Father's Day was just the topper of it all. Fortunately they are a strong family and have been able to get through it. I just get sick even thinking about it, but this thread reminded me of it.
