The listening experience used to be from track one to the end of the CD, but I can't think of a single CD that's come out in the past 8 years or so that hasn't made me skip skip skip through at least 3 or 4 filler tracks that had no business being on a CD with 15-17 songs on it. I wish bands would get back to crafting a "listening experience" on their records instead of trying to cram as many songs as possible on the CD just so buyers feel they've got "value." What would you rather have, a case of Old Milwaukee or a six pack of Anchor Steam?

Hey J, have you checked out the new Loverboy cd. A very solid 10 tracks on there. I've yet to skip anything on there. :D

I skip track 3 when my kids are in the car with me. I figured it would just save me having to explain what "I woke up late and I got laid" means.

As well as, "My ex found out her boyfriend was gay" or whatever line that was... :P

Although most of this album is not up to Journey standards Faith in the Heartland is a great song for any time period.

I'd say the same for "Better Life"...although it does need tightening up a bit....

I think the song is THAT good...so they tried to force feed it. It was the only way to get it out there. My cousin hates anything Post-Perry, but ranks this song in their top 20 all time. Its a fantastic song, especially live.

I think Arrival has too many songs on it...(well, 4 too many sappy ballads), but Generations should have had more. I say that because they were giving songs away to people..and hoping something would stick for some people. The more songs the better chance...it wasn't an album, it was like a collection of MP3's....

I think it was a good song, but I do think it was too long. I may have listened to the entire song through maybe 8 times.

Faith In The Heartland and The Place In Your Heart stand up against anything they've done.

Every Generation is damn close.

I think Place in your heart was a lot better than FITH....Every generation never caught on with me. The ending reminded me of Roxette's You've Got the look.

VHIII is an awful record all the way around. I can tolerate only one track on that record. Just abysmal.

Let me guess.."fire in the hole" ? :) Only song on the album that sounded like a VH song..

FITH... Is that Faith in the heartland..or fire in the hole by VH? LOL Place in your heart sounds like a prototypical Journey song.. Faith in the Heartland I really liked.. Reminded me of how they start vintage Journey songs like Separate Ways,Edge of the Blade.. Very nice guitar riff at the beginning.. JMO

Yes, Faith In The Heartland! I bought VHIII and listened through it one time and never listened to it again. I like the build in Faith In The Heartland, and through the second verse or so, but then I get tired of it. Brevity is the soul of rock and roll!

Agree on TPIYH. One of their best.

FITH a little too long for me though. I'll give it a listen now and again, good driving song.

Every Generation would have been GREAT if Augeri had done the vocals on it. Good song, good lyrics, wrong singer. I skip it unfortunately.

When I heard Gary Cherone was going to be lead singer of VH.. I just about cried.. I can't stand how he sings..I hated him with Extreme..Why that guy? Anyways,I knew it wouldn't last and it didn't.. Your right,FITH does get long in the tooth..Loved how SA sang Out of Harms way.. love that song.. :)

I didn't read most of this thread but I wanted to say that (oddly enough) upon first listen I thought Generations finally got Steve's vocals up front. My problem with Arrival was that it sounded like the music over-rode the vocals. Similar issue with Red 13 although I thought it was getting better (the vocals, not the rest). Still, as rough as the production on Red 13 is, I enjoy the energy and sponteneous feeling more. But I agree that a band used to a "polished" sound should never have settled for the production on ANY of their post-Perry era product.

As for Generations, I am certain it was rushed because of the tour. Much like Red 13, the band had a plan that they couldn't follow through with unless something was sacrificed. I think production suffered...

I received a copy of one Generations track that someone else worked with just to clean it up a little. A surprising difference with little effort.

Want to talk about a medium-low budget bands putting together sonically perfect records? Listen to any John Payne-era Asia album. Stunningly perfect. Of course, Friga is no Geoff Downes. Seriously, after 25 years, I don't think Cain can touch Downes, talent-wise.

P.S. The greatest Asia song you never heard of? "Sad Situation" off of "Aria".

8)

Underrated. EXACTLY. I think the best songs from the Payne era:

Sad Situation
Who Will Stop the Rain
The Day Before the War
U Bring Me Down
Military Man
Ghost in the Mirror
Hands of Time
Ready to Go Home
You're the Stranger
The Last Time
Tell Me Why
Please Forgive Me
We Fall Apart
Heaven
Forgive Me
Love Under Fire
Lay Down Your Arms

Are, overall, much better than the best Howe-era material, when all is said and done.
