Awww.... T-Bone! Dude, I'm sooo sorry! I think I was only looking at your avatar, and thought that was Monker's AV. I'm still pretty new here... Sorry for the mistake, but hey -- your fix worked for 3 people today, and saved me a ton of time, so thanks.

Hey, CPC -- I'm trying Opera again, and like it except for one thing -- it seems to scroll rather choppily. Very smooth in Firefox, but clumsy in Opera. Do you have the same experience, or is there some tweak for that?

T-Bone wrote:Last Tuesday, I downloaded the newest security and OS updates from Microsoft. After they were installed, I was having problems getting onto many of my websites such as ebay and a few others. After a little swearing, I decided to look up what updates I installed, and sure enough, I found one for Internet Explorer. I went to my Add/Remove programs and uninstalled it and the problem went away.

Okay - I began experiencing this problem today, and was told by a friend that she couldn't get one of the same sites I couldn't get (using IE), but that she could get it using firefox. So I figured it was an IE problem and I remembered this thread and I followed the steps exactly, uninstalled update KB942615, and restarted. But the problem is still happening.

I'm running IE7 on Vista though, (not IE6 on XP like is described on the fix it page) so I don't know how much that may have to do with it (or if I even needed to uninstall the thing anyway...)

on the second link you provided, T-Bone - it says this:

WORKAROUND
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Download the 946627 package now. (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 70139AE839)

I'm hesitant to try it because I have IE7 and Vista though... advice anyone?

Can't speak for Vista -- my first Vista system is on it's way. Uninstalling that particular update worked for me on 3 Windows XP PCs. Also just blocked it in Windows Update from future downloads. For you, it probably shouldn't hurt to install the update -- you can always uninstall it if it doesn't correct the problem. Good luck!

It's an XP download/patch but I tried it anyway and got "Not enough storage for this process to complete"...
It would not install for me.

Whoops... I did speak too soon. Yes, that won't work for you. Let me do some research and I'll post something back.

Hey, BJG -- I can only find where uninstalling that patch on Vista systems and rebooting resolved the issue. On the XP systems I fixed, I didn't actually even need to reboot, though I was prompted to. You might want to try reinstalling that patch, then rebooting, then uninstalling it again, just in case something went wrong with the uninstall.

I found a temporary fix to this problem. It's called the "download FireFox and use that instead" patch.

My system is dual booted with both XP and Vista. I'll switch over to Vista and see if there's any problems with that OS

Mmmmmkkkaayyy... I'm on the Vista partition of my computer now and having no problems as far as I can see. When I built this new PC, I wanted to get used to Vista while still having my trusty XP, so I split the main hard drive into 3 partitions. Installed XP on the 1st, then installed Vista on the 2nd, and then all the "My Documents" stuff on the 3rd. I don't really like Internet Explorer 7 yet, but I'm getting used to it. Vista has no choice for 6 or 7, so I have to use 7 on this one, but since XP does have the choice, I use IE6 on the XP

Looks like all the updates were installed on my Vista and no problems, so maybe you're browser is having other issues?

Thank you so much for this information. I have been having trouble for over a week now and did not understand why. I went in (as you said) and uninstalled the update. Now, IE is much better! :D

No idea. I'd been having the problem described in your original post (IE7 crashing) , and yesterday, one of the sites in my favorites became inaccessible. So I followed the steps, removed the update, restarted, and the site was still inaccessible (I'd been on it as recently as yesterday morning, came home and *poof*, gone).

I downloaded FireFox and I can get it there, so I know it's not a problem on the website.

Interestingly, overnight my PC installed its Windows updates and restarted itself. So I went to see what got installed and right on top:

"Cumlative Security update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB942615) - 12/22/07"

The little bastard squeaked back in when I wasn't looking! I was hoping maybe this was a Vista fix for the offending 12/12/07 version, but apparently not. And the one website that was not accessible is still not.

It'll keep doing that unless you block it via Windows Update. Uninstall it, reboot, then manually go to the Windows Update site and choose "Custom". When it comes up as an option, deselect that update, then choose the checkmark to ignore it. If they ever fix it, you can always reactivate it.

*bangs head on desk* .... *again*

I kind of figured that's what was going on when I saw it in there again. Fuck this, it's gonna have to wait, I have too much to do in the next several days... LOL! I have a backup with FireFox now, so that will be my temporary patch.

Hey, ya know, they are just trying to make computers more like humans these days... Hardly anyone knows how to take "no" for an answer anymore. :P Your move to Firefox might be a one-way trip. :P

Also, go into your control panel and then into the Automatic Updates section and check the settings. You may have it set to install everything automatically, which is why it gets in. Choose to Download, but YOU'LL choose when to install them option.

Fuck Internet Explorer to death. I know you HAVE to use it for some webpages, but for all of the others, Firefox is so much better. The reason I say that is because there are so many add-ons you can install. Like ad blocker, video downloader, script blocker, the list is extensive. With IE, you have to use it as it is.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.
