It's been said here that Arnel's lack of stage presence has to do with the fact that the Asian culture is different than the western culture in that they don't 'get into' the music like we do here. The clips of the Perry-era Journey in Japan have been referenced as something to relate to. At first, I thought, "yeah, that makes sense".

A few days ago, however, I ran across these YouTube clips from a japanese concert. Perhaps these are more a reflection of today's asian concert experience. As you can clearly see, not only is the crowd totally into it, but the performers have an incredible amount of energy and STAGE PRESENCE. Even the Asian dude is all over the place!

Check these clips out, they're simply amazing! 8)

After seeing this, I cannot buy the argument that Arnel lacks stage presence due to his respect for the asian culture, since they are more reserved and don't show their excitement for the music like the westerners do. Just doesn't hold water to me. (Tak does remind me of NS, though... And Jack is a beast!!!)

What do you guys think?

Yeah I was just watching some Mr Big clips, it grew on me. I like this guy's voice and tone - great singer

If the youtube clips were good enough for the midget guitar god to proclaim AP the "real deal" and hire him as the new frontman, then why aren't these clips good enough for those of us that don't like the guy? Why should I have to "wait and see, or give him a chance" I am looking at EXACTLY the same videos that Neal did on youtube.

Great point Jeff. And youtube clips were what most of us had to go on with JSS also, until seeing him live. You're either sold or your not. :? Arnel has a great voice and will probably do just fine with Journey..........just doesn't wow me like Perry, JSS or Eric Martin does. Almost eerie just how well he can cover all these bands and sound just like the appropriate lead vocalist........sorry, just nothing unique enough there to keep me intrigued. Time will tell, I guess.

Actually Deb I had heard Jeff's work on both Talisman and Yngwie albums prior so I had a little more to go on than some - Not to mention Soul Sirkus.

No one is forcing anybody to adapt a wait and see attitude.

If the porn tape sucks, put the tissue back in the bathroom and rent a new one.

Paco,

How many times have people posted the "wait and see, or the give him a chance" before you judge him? I couldn't possibly count them all.

Seeing him at MRfest, he sounds just as good today as he did in his Mr. Big days. :)

LOL, still can't believe I so blindly followed Bon Jovi's career in the 80s when there was the talent of Mr. Big out there......both great bands..... but vocally, no comparison.

Simply, he waited to see him personally before making a judgement. then waited to hear him sing right in front of the Journey crew before they collectively made their stamp of approval. The final decision was not based on the youtube videos but after seeing the man and hearing him, and talking to him, and assessing the chemistry, and the commitment, and etc.

Wow, I love the Zep cover. There's a quality in Arnel's voice that I think is outstanding--maybe the power of it. I actually like it when he drags the notes out at the end of some of Journey's songs. There's a squib on Caveman's website, "Thanks for visiting the website, and thanks for all the emails - I have been recording many new amazing Journey tracks in San Francisco, and am now mixing in Las Vegas, and still have a very busy schedule ahead. Looking forward to being home with my family towards the end of the month." I am excited.

Here's a question... does anyone think he might get bored just singing Journey music? He has covered a LOT of different bands...well. I wonder if he will tire of only singing Journey music (the dirty dozen at that, because new album or not, I believe past experience has shown us that they will in fact be singing the DD primarily).

Responses???

The American Dollar, as of today, equals 41 Philippine Pesos. Whatever cash he makes as the singer of Journey could buy lots of lumpia, hell, he could get Pork, Beef, & Veggie with LaChoy sweet & sour sauce, we're talking party platters here by the jeepney. Considering that he song a bunch of songs, including Journey amongst others, for lots less, I think the dirty dozen won't phase him.

If the youtube clips were good enough for the midget guitar god to proclaim AP the "real deal" and hire him as the new frontman, then why aren't these clips good enough for those of us that don't like the guy? I'm of the opinion that since we are just fans( I admit some are more hardcore than others), that our opinion just doesn't weigh as much as Neal's, Jon's, the rest of the ban an of course, the management.

It took Led Zep for Deano to take a leap of faith, others will need a lot more than youtube. True that, but once the music is out there, that is what will determine what happens next. There are a vocal few that see this as a failure from the start, I'm not one of those. I'm an optimist as you all can probably tell, but having said that I know how harsh things can get when an outsider crashes your party. But if that outsider finds a way to blend...it's all good, and the tension lessens.
