I turn and run screaming immidiately if I hear even so much as the opening riffs of YSMALN, BIB, or HB.

What do you mean?

I've always been on record here as saying I prefer Augeri as Journey singer to Perry.

I'll say what I said there, that to me Augeri in Journey was perry with balls.

Need I start a thread on it?

Good one!

I love Departure. I can remember the day it was released, buying it, and going gaga over the pics on the sleeve while listening over and over again. I did vote for Bruce, probably because I think it is such a great album and the actual song is brilliant. Heaven and Hell- great album as well. Saw that tour at a summer festival... which one escapes me? Was it the Summer Blowout at the Coliseum? Same bill as Journey and the Babys?

Been my stance from day 1 on these forums and remains so.

RockheadDeano, impart the whole board with my stance on the near ruination of the live recordings of that era.

Hey, I'm good. :)

Anytime I want to hear someone try to sing Open Arms live with approximately twice as much histrionics as most Sicilian opera singers going "Owowowowowowowowowowwowowowowowowowowowowowowowowwopen
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahammmmms" I have the Houston dvd.

It is a damn good dvd, when I'm able to block out the singer's (edited, in deference to the spelling bad cop/worse cop St John and Deano) cartoonish mugging on some of the songs, usually the ballads and focus on the entire song and all the components.

C'mon Joepa, Perry is the reason this message board exists! Bagging on him is stupid.

That's just it, my good man.

I'm not that bright, and as such EASILY distracted when he starts turning songs into parodies live.

Parody is exactly what Journey has turned into since they decided to force people to buy Generations with a ticket. Pathetic!

Bah.
Augeri and JSS depussified them.

Remains to be seen what mini perry, the Phillipino nationalist brings.

If by "depussified" you mean irrelevent. Then I agree. Relevence left the building with Perry.

Augeri was Perry with balls? HA HA HA HA HA....2 rebuttals for that statement.

One - go listen to Edge of The Blade and tell me Augeri coulda got a tenth of that power in there.

Two - Find me a time when Perry used tapes.

Live, on Edge Of The Blade and most everything else Perry used too many "Whoopee, listen to me!!!" effeminate vocal histrionics that I (again) find distracting.
Augeri sang it straight, if a little more workmanlike live.
And I think the Augeri studio vox on a lot of stuff had just as much vocal "power" as the older stuff. He's blasting on WWMA, NCC, The Time, SOG, FITH, TPIYH, Believe, KTYLM (again, criticise the latter 2-4 songs as you surely will but those are powerful resonant strong vocals).

And the JSS version of Edge Of The Blade? More balls than both, it's just a deeper, powerful more masculine voice.

To be quite fair, the perry studio vocal on Edge Of The Blade is, as with all the Frontiers era, nothing short of stunning. WithOUT the live vocal gymnastic gimmeckery.

Back in Black over Departure

Postby infinityplusone » Fri Jan 18, 2008 3:31 pm

And I'm the biggest (well, certainly tallest at almost 6'7") JOURNEY fan in the world.

But here's the thing, Back in Black is a perfect album. Every single song is a work of evil beauty. It rocks raw and your parents hated it. And yet, it pops up in the most surprising way in EVERY SINGLE CD COLLECTION you encounter. You could meet someone who's only into world music and French electronica and they's have this CD. That's what I mean.

Whiskey? Add some water...

I'm not gonna slam you for preferring Augeri over Perry. But you've got to admit Steve A. should have just thrown in the towel on "Be Good to Yourself" (2001 DVD).

As much as you disdain Perrr's histronics (or "stiff preening" as Rolling Stone once put it), I vomit when Augeri's forced to tone it down (tune it down?) on the "woh woh wa whooah , woh woh wooah's" right before chorus 'cause he can't hit the Perry notes. And it's not just a vocal athletics issue - Perry wrote these songs with his and uniquely his abilities in mind.

"workmanlike" - I'll give Augeria that.
