Hey ProgRocker - don't lump Whitesnake in with all those muppet bands. Have you heard any of the Whitesnake albums recorded before they went all bouffant in '87?

I discovered that era of Whitesnake just a couple of years ago or so. There is some great stuff there, particularly "Ready an' Willing" (1980).

Hell, when Ripper said TOOTH AND NAIL wasn't "hit orriented", I took a step back. ALONE AGAIN used to get played every ten minutes when I was a kid, and INTO THE FIRE and JUST GOT LUCKY got hevy rotation as well...

Yes, actually I wasn't remembering correctly. They did have videos for at least 3 of the songs on "TaN", and those songs did get great airplay as well. You are right that there seemed to be some kind of disconnect between airplay and Billboard charting, but I've never really looked at it before.

Also, why is there no live Dokken DVD? I don't mean that thing with the videos they just put out.

I'm surprised that From Conception: Live 1981 has not been brought up. That's turned out to be my single favorite Dokken CD. I love the pre-BtC songs, especially "Nightrider." The band sounded nice and raw and Don has a unique voice. Not as powerful as many other singers, but definitely unique. You hear him, you know it's Don. The Bremen Beat Club footage from '81 on Youtube is awesome.

On CDUniverse, one guy left an interesting review for, I believe, TaN (or maybe it's BtC). Apparently the guy had known Don back in the day and heard all the songs for the album before Don went to Germany for a bunch of live dates circa '81 or '82. The songs were also recorded in a studio there. The final versions were apparently not as striking and the guy made a point to stress how underwhelming those "new" versions were compared to the roughs.

And all you have to do is watch the Live In Japan DVD to know that George Lynch is a killer guitar player.

Wait, I thought you asked why there were no live Dokken DVDs, and then you just mentioned one... haha! Maybe I misunderstood? There are actually at least two more -- "One Live Night" and "Live From The Sun". I only have the latter which came as a bonus disc with my CD of the same title.

Oops...

I meant why is there no vintage live stuff on DVD. Like the pro-shot footage (also on Youtube, but from a VHS source so it doesn't look too hot) from the Back For The Attack tour in '87. Yeah, I did mention Live In Japan and aside from Don going "blond" (which I can't take seriously) it's a good show. All I can guess is that if they do issue any of the older live stuff Don will have to give George and Jeff money, and to hell with that, right? :D

I don't have OLN or Live From The Sun.

Ya know, Ripper, I never understood why SLIPPING AWAY wasn't a hit. I loved that tune...my fave of all the Dokken "power ballads"...what do you think: overkill from that album with all the other singles?

Damn, Andrew...you need to bite the bullit and give the Ripper a DOKKEN board!

"Slippin' Away" is a much better song, in my opinion, than "In My Dreams".

I haven't heard it in so long -- think I will pop it in now. :P

About the Dokken board, it's been requested, but I wouldn't go there myself. Too many boards to keep up with... I'd rather stay here and keep talking about Journey. :P
