Definitions? Help!

Over the past few weeks I've been having conversations with some acquaintances about the R&R HOF and music in general. I've tried to explain why several of the bands/people nominated should not have been, because they are outside the realm of rock. Needless to say, these people REALLY aren't getting what I am saying. They, in turn, tell me that all roads lead to the genre of rock. As much as lovers of rock would love for that to be true, it simply isn't.

That said, and knowing many of you are walking, talking encyclopedias of musical information..... Would any of you mind taking a crack at breaking down the different genres, with basic definitions? Or perhaps there's someplace I can send them, here online, that will give them the quick lesson in how wrong they are. Ha!

Simply put, these people are firmly in the camp of Madonna being the embodiment of Rock. Can you see now, why I need this help?

I couldn't even begin to help you out with that Panther because it's all changed so much since the term "rock and roll" was coined.

If it was, as I've always thought, Alan Freed, then a lot of what he was then calling rock and roll would never include Boston, Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Survivor, ect.

In fact, a lot of what I remember listening to on the radio that was called rock and roll in the days before the British invasion became known as either country or R&B music sometime in the late 60's. What was then called pop was Sinatra, Dean Martin, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Jack Jones, etc. Now some people call Journey pop.

Damned if I know the definitions.

As for the roots of rock n roll....it all goes back to the blues...before that who cares (it was so long ago).

One could argue that pop stemmed from Jazz...which was one of the earliest forms of music around.

No way all things stemmed from Rock.
