I think that's why I liked Steve Augeri and Jeff Scott Soto so much. They had their own unique style and personality that was added to the classics (although I was and still am against the idea of classics being re-recorded.)

JSS maybe..but ten years on I've yet to locate the mysterious 'unique style' of Steve Augeri.
listen to Tall Stories and Generations back to back. The Generations vocals vary a bit, maybe because there were 15 years in between, but given the differences in the bands, you should be able to hear the similarity in style, especially on the uptempo rock songs.
That being said, where is the mysterious unique style of Steve Perry? Is it the very smooth Infinity, the rougher Frontiers, the motown-applied-to-rock feel of Street Talk/Raised on Radio, or the breathy style of FTLOSM/TBF? VERY few singers over 20 years are going to have the exact same sound--John Farnham maybe being one of the very few exceptions.
Augeri has his own style, but it's nowhere near as domineering as someone like Perry. I'll give you that.
