Piano player's opinion on FAITHFULLY (re-record)

Postby PianoMan1986 » Tue Jun 10, 2008 3:25 am

Greetings all,

Maybe it's just because I'm a piano player myself, but I can't believe the sound that was used on the FAITHFULLY re-record. To me it sounds like a bad electric grand, as opposed to the original having a cutting/sharp-edged sound that really carried the song when coupled with the vocals. I'm not saying that overall the song doesn't sound good, I'm just saying that that one particular thing discourages me from listening to it a little bit.

I was just wondering if anyone else shared these same sentiments.

Thanks,

Nick

It sounds like he missed a key near the beginning too.

I completely agree, in someplaces it sounds like an old Wurlitzer electic piano. No way is it a real grand piano

Tack this onto the 'What were they thinking', list on these re-records. It borders on excellence, and vomit.

On a related note the keyboard intro to the Separate Ways re-recording sounds like a Fisher Price toy!

Although i love the new cd, I think they used some of the keyboards from walmart. maybe the was part of the deal. Frigas Fischer Price

Most definitely... first thing I noticed and the last thing I noticed as well... the piano tones on the original versions of songs like DSB and Faithfully were killer. Crisp, cutting, plenty of attack, and just plain out big. These sound very fake and certainly sterile.

I think Cain mailed this one in. His keys on the new stuff are unremarkable too. His worst recording with Journey, I'd say. Too bad...everyone else pretty much brings it. Although I have to say the lyrics and dreadful in a lot of cases. Maybe another sign of Cain not really giving this one his all?

Separate Ways definitely has a wanky keyboard sound going. Terrible.
I wouldn't say "vomit" and I wouldn't say the most horrendous thing I've ever heard, but still, it sure was a weird deal for them to do. I agree with daytrpr, everyone else, especially Ross, Deen and Arnel appear to have 'brought it'. There are spots where Neal and Jon's sounds are bit weak (on the re-records).

Neal can do no wrong (musically). I'd swap him out for Deen. p.s. I HATE being a critic, because this is one of my favorite albums in a long time! But we all know how good Journey can and has been.
