It was pretty much political suicide at the time, but he proposed Raising the Gasoline Tax by 50 cents per gallon ( It was about $1.00 per gallon )

He believed if we could change our consumption habits we would be less reliant on foreign countries for our energy needs.

I don't think putting a tax on anything allowing the government more of our money to squander solves anything -- EVER. There are solutions out there and when gas is $5 a gallon for everyone, all hell is going to break loose in this country until we get them. Even at the cheap ARco stations where I live, regular unleaded is $4.45 a gallon. That is insane!

I respect your opinion, but Worldwide Demand ( along with a speculative bubble ) is what is driving prices through the roof. You hear talk of India and China s rising demand contributing to the problem, but I just read ( at CNN.com , I think ) and article that said our demand is still 11 times higher than India's, If we had found a way to reduce our demand by 20-30 percent, something that would be possible with 28 years to work on it, Our prices wouldn't be even close to what we are paying today.

LMAO... guys.. the government already SUBSIDIZES the oil industry with our tax dollars.... to the tune of over 500 Billion a year... (which btw is how we have had such historically cheap gas)... The spike in current oil prices is caused by increased world demand and speculation.

The real reason we haven't seen alternative energy R&D take off in the US is because the government subsidy for it has yet to really materialize.... in fact last I read it was about 1/10th of the oil susbdies.... the oil companies are still "sucking at the nipple" of government (our) money.

When this happens:

1) The oil companies are finished reaping (raping) profits from us
2) and most importantly - they have figured out how to monetize alternative energy to the masses

Then government subsidies will then conveniently migrate away from oil to alternative energy, and the energy companies can continue to maintain market ownership and profitability.
