At least the "well it was Father's Day" thing's an admittal that people are wanting and deliberately, knowingly, willingly buying it.
don't take impulse buying as a bad thing. Once you get out of the hardcore and/or psychotic part of the fanbase, probably 60-70% of all sales are impulse buys for ANY album. Whether it's a case of buying it because it is "cool", or buying it because you heard that song on the radio...it's the same thing. Music, movies, dvds, candy, ice cream....it's all impulse buying if you generalize it that far. Definitely nothing to be ashamed of, and I'm sure Journey is rightly proud of this.
Anyways, Father's Day could easily see a small spike. Do I see it as more than 5-10k copies--if that? No. That means Journey is doing well. Albums need legs though if they are going to rack up impressive numbers, and it appears word-of-mouth is good for sales to have that little of a dropoff. So far, so good.

not quite...unless they get a MAJOR boost. They are at roughly 200,000 right now. Gold is 500,000. What they should do easily is pass Arrival next week. You are looking at gold in about 3-4 weeks--or mid-to-late July if sales hold on. I would expect sales to fall for next week while they tour Europe, then hopefully get a little kick when the US tour starts, which should hopefully hold for a few months while they are on tour, and hope they get radio to come on strong because of the sales or get on tv. What they REALLY need is an appearance on Leno/Letterman. That would make all the difference in the world.
They only have to sell 250,000 units because it's a double CD. Equates to 500,000.
Fair enough, but they probably need to sell 500,000 UNITS before you can make any qualifications on whether the album is a success. Arrival did 250k, and still did nothing. Next week will be the key week, as Father's Day likely boosted sales a little this week. Either that, or first full week in the US tour. Then you get to see whether this thing has legs. Either way, still a nice surprise.

At only around 10 bucks a CD, that is misleading though. In years past a package like that would have been over 20 bucks, so in terms of units they may certify it as gold, but in terms of cash paid, it's not quite the same thing. It's priced as a single CD. Not meaning to quibble though, it's a good start.

Walmart is paying Journey a whole lot more than the labels did per unit. Something like $4.00. That's got to be getting the boys in the writing mood.

ok....but not in a month.
I think 500,000 units is very possible given the tour coming up.

Incorrect. Platinum is a given. Multi-Platinum is now the real issue.

I'm trying to keep expectations on a realistic level knowing this band. Get past "gold" status, then go for "gold" units sold. Then, try for platinum. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for dissapointment if the thing stalls out for some reason.
