c'mon, they need MTV and VH1. those are major sales boosters. don't they have a music video or sumthin? a teaser commercial would also be great.

At least the "well it was Father's Day" thing's an admittal that people are wanting and deliberately, knowingly, willingly buying it.

don't take impulse buying as a bad thing. Once you get out of the hardcore and/or psychotic part of the fanbase, probably 60-70% of all sales are impulse buys for ANY album. Whether it's a case of buying it because it is "cool", or buying it because you heard that song on the radio...it's the same thing. Music, movies, dvds, candy, ice cream....it's all impulse buying if you generalize it that far. Definitely nothing to be ashamed of, and I'm sure Journey is rightly proud of this.

Anyways, Father's Day could easily see a small spike. Do I see it as more than 5-10k copies--if that? No. That means Journey is doing well. Albums need legs though if they are going to rack up impressive numbers, and it appears word-of-mouth is good for sales to have that little of a dropoff. So far, so good.

I agree with you, K. In fact, some businesses design their ads and display in order to encourage impulse buying! That's just one of the many legitimate strategies to boost sales. And the business bottom line doesn't care!

seeing how neither of those stations really play videos anymore, it wouldn't do much good.

Vh1 Classic maybe....But at most, you'll see a live clip from the DVD much like they did with Higher Place.

not quite...unless they get a MAJOR boost. They are at roughly 200,000 right now. Gold is 500,000. What they should do easily is pass Arrival next week. You are looking at gold in about 3-4 weeks--or mid-to-late July if sales hold on. I would expect sales to fall for next week while they tour Europe, then hopefully get a little kick when the US tour starts, which should hopefully hold for a few months while they are on tour, and hope they get radio to come on strong because of the sales or get on tv. What they REALLY need is an appearance on Leno/Letterman. That would make all the difference in the world.

They only have to sell 250,000 units because it's a double CD. Equates to 500,000.

Fair enough, but they probably need to sell 500,000 UNITS before you can make any qualifications on whether the album is a success. Arrival did 250k, and still did nothing. Next week will be the key week, as Father's Day likely boosted sales a little this week. Either that, or first full week in the US tour. Then you get to see whether this thing has legs. Either way, still a nice surprise.

ok....but not in a month.

I think 500,000 units is very possible given the tour coming up.

At only around 10 bucks a CD, that is misleading though. In years past a package like that would have been over 20 bucks, so in terms of units they may certify it as gold, but in terms of cash paid, it's not quite the same thing. It's priced as a single CD. Not meaning to quibble though, it's a good start.

Walmart is paying Journey a whole lot more than the labels did per unit. Something like $4.00. That's got to be getting the boys in the writing mood. :D

I think "very possibly" might be an understatement considering how much it has sold so far. The thing would have to go absolutely flat at this point, and 2nd week sales don't show that. Another couple of weeks if the legs continue, and platinum units could be in the discussion. That being said, don't fire up the Journey is back celebrations just yet. It does look good so far though, and I'm sure the band is elated.

One thing I will say...anyone that wants to see Perry again better hope this thing sells millions. Journey doing well without him might just get him doing something serious. Kinda a reverse psychology angle.

Incorrect. Platinum is a given. Multi-Platinum is now the real issue.

No way sales in the top five two weeks is just the Journey loons (like us) or random impulse buyers at Wally World. My secretary told me today that her dad asked specifically for the NEW Journey album for Father's Day, and the bellboy in the hotel I was at this past weekend saw my Journey shirt and said, "Hey, the new Journey album; saw them on TV, and I've been meaning to pick it up."

I'm trying to keep expectations on a realistic level knowing this band. Get past "gold" status, then go for "gold" units sold. Then, try for platinum. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for dissapointment if the thing stalls out for some reason.

I've read a few posts were people have gone in to buy the cd and found it out of stock. Happened to me today. A super wal mart had none available and the manager didn't know when they'd be getting more. I was going to buy a copy for my brother too. Keep those shelves stocked Wal Mart!!

Oh, happened to me day 1, Colonel.
Walked in to see no Revelation and be met w/ Easter Island monument stares upon requesting it.

Now 2 weeks out and 200K units sold I was in said Walmart last night and Reveleation was the centerpiece of their music section w/ a kiosk of about 200 strong at the front with standup placards and approx 30 units in the Journey section as well.
It's moving and they're promoting it, it's moving and they're promoting it....

I don't see the difference from sales of any other high demand album, OTHER than it did not benefit from the initial pre week 1 push.

Just for the info of the poster who asked and Andrew, Revelation entered the UK Album Chart after 1 week at #68

http://www.theofficialcharts.com/top40_albums.php

That's not bad considering how little impact Journey have made on the UK charts in the past.
This is the highest any Journey album has reached in the UK since Frontiers which charted at a best of #6 in 83' and Escape which charted at a best of #32 in 82'

In the individual major music retailers, Revelation is at #31 in it's 2nd week with HMV

http://hmv.com/hmvweb/navigate.do?ctx=1 ... bums+Chart

Which means that they will have multiple copies out on display in the main music display area, not just on the shelf in the A-Z section.

Hopefully sales will take a little surge again over here once the band complete their UK tour dates.
