If that is correct you could argue that Journey's music lacks artistic integrity. Does it make a difference if the artist isn't into the music he or she makes?

I don't think that means Journey's music lacks integrity.
I can only compare this to my own situation - my favourite music is melodic rock. I also like other types of music very much, but melodic rock is what I listen to most.
However, [I make my living as a singer BTW] my voice is better suited to singing jazzy/bluesy type stuff, so that is what I sing.

I don't think that means I lack artistic integrity, I think it means I perform what I am best at.
Maybe that applies to Neal?

Although to my ears, he appears to be excellent at playing any type of music.

It's always annoyed me a bit to hear Neal make those statements, publically (and he's done it NUMEROUS times, over the years). It definitely gives you pause, to wonder just how "genuine" the music is, when one of the key members doesn't miss a chance to tell everyone "Hey, this Journey music stuff just doesn't work for me". Neal should hire a PR firm, who can advise him on what is smart to say, and what isn't, because he sounds like a complete jackass when he says such dopey stuff!

Fair enough, but if you were a songwriter would you write songs in a style you didn't like. The answer is probably "yes, if it pays good"

Yeah, and when you create a winning formula which fans like, ie, '"the legacy" sound - it's easier to stick with it and keep giving them more of the same.
But if they are touring many months of each year I expect they do want to listen to something different.
You have a point there.

I don't listen to CD's of any of the songs I cover in my show - so I can agree with that, even though it hadnt occurred to me until you said it.

Many times, musicians - especially song writers - never listen to their own type of music.

That way they are not even subconciously tempted to accidently plagarize.

Pete Townsend has often stated that he prefers to listen to classical music for just that reason.

I can relate to Neal. I played in a band for awhile that I enjoyed playing in and put in alot of effort on, BUT, I wasn't a fan of the direction or even the type of music we were playing.. it wasn't artistically charged for me at all.

I agree - he also once said that he thinks Journey could have made it big time if they had been allowed to keep going as a jazzy expiremental band - i cannot say i agree with him. they might had a career of sorts but not the stellar one they did end up. To be fair tho - he deffo went thru a phase where he liked hard rock - so maybe thats as close as it got. He liked AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and EVH.
