Ignorance to Journey's music

Postby amaron » Mon Jul 07, 2008 10:42 am

On another board there is a thread about Rock Band 2 and how AWYWI is one of the songs.

I personally was disappointed with this news and stated that there were many other songs I would have preferred.

This was the response I got:

Anyway You Want It for Journey is like More Than A Feeling for Boston. Sure, there are better songs, but it's EASILY their most popular and well-known. It's practically a rock anthem. And it's a song everybody's going to want to take their turn at playing or singing to feel like a real rock star.

I'm not even sure how to respond to that. It's so completely void of fact, especially coming from someone who is under 30.

I don't know...obviously I would consider Don't Stop Believin' to be their most popular and well-known. But I don't think Any Way You Want It is that far behind. As much as I would love Winds Of March or Remember Me to be on Rock Band 2, it's clearly going to be a more well-known song.

I'm more irritated by the fact that this person's exposure to the band is probably limited to The Simpsons, The Sopranos, and Caddyshack.

True. That's always going to be the case, sadly. Although any exposure is better than no exposure.

Since the Song has been used in two movies (CaddyShack, Charlies Angles F.T.) maybe there is something in the licensing that lends that song to more commercial use. The song is one long repetetive riff anyway so it fits better than DSB if used in a game like Rockband or Guitar Hero IMO.
If we're talking a Karaoke game than DSB is in, hands down.

You get that assumption out of them saying AWYWI is Journey's most known song? How?

BTW I always thought that would be the song to show up on Guitar Hero or Rock Band. DSB wouldn't work because there's too much piano. Maybe once they make a Rock Band with piano it will be included. AWYWI is guitar driven throughout and that's why it works.

Wheel In The Sky would work as well. It's very well known and guitar driven.

At least they know the difference between Journey and Boston!
If I had five pounds every time I had a conversation about Journey here with another Brit and they say, "Oh yeah, I love Journey. More Than A Feeling was great!" I'd be a rich woman!

I'm always surprised that DSB is the song everyone associates with Journey...even when it first came out I don't remember it being as popular as it is now...never heard it as a catch phrase & all that. In fact, it wasn't my fave so I had forgotten what it was titled - always thought of it as "the small town girl song". To me, it was "Lights" that I thought of when I thought of Journey....and, later, "Open Arms".

Sarah's explanation makes sense in that context.

First, they said it was EASILY Journey's most known/popular song. That shows a complete lack of knowledge of the Journey catalog, especially with the two studio albums that came out after Departure. There really isn't ONE song that defines the group. There was a huge musical change from Infinity to ROR.

Second, my assumption was based on the limited number of Journey songs used in film/tv/etc. The three things I mentioned are, IMO, popular within my age group (25-30) which I know this person is.

Third, Piano should have nothing to do with a song not being in the game. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is in Rock Band... and it has a looong keyboard part in the middle of the song.

amaron,
you have to realize that whats famous to you as a JOURNEY FAN is much different than whats the most famous songs to the average people on the Rock Band boards. The demographic consists of more than 50% of people who werent even born when Journey released any of those songs.....

On another note, rumors are that there is a Journey pack (much like the Boston pack) planend for a RockBand 2 release.

You are correct, but the reason this all came out in the first place was because I commented, as a Journey fan, that in my opinion there were many other songs I would have rather seen in RB2.

This person then corrected me as if I had no knowledge of the band's music at all.

Yep, I know what you mean,,,, but look at it this way..... this person was probably born long after you had your 1st hooker.... so his opinion doesnt count! just like your 1st hooker's opinions didnt count back then either  :D

Well I agree with that person that DSB and AWYWI are indeed Jouney's most known songs today. Open Arms is probably 3rd. But that's about it... not as many people know Separate Ways, Lights, or anything from ROR.
