Rolling Stones top singers of all time

It's the second article on the page...

I found it surprising that Steve Perry is not mentioned in the article. Surely Rolling Stones would not leave him off the ballot, although I guess RS has a history of not liking Journey, so who knows!

Fuck Rolling Stone.... They are slanted and biased and are only interested in pushing what they think will sell mags. Journalistic integrity is of no interest to them.

They hope they can set the trends and if they cant they hop on the bandwagon. Jan Werner will burn is musical hell for his bullshit throughout the years.

Rolling Stone has ALWAYS ALWAYS hated Journey. They once proclaimed REM the band of the year. Are you f'ing kidding me? Rolling Stone is no roadmap to good music or talent. Jann Wenner's a douche bag.

Uh...I hate RS as much as anyone, but the fact the Fox news article doesn't list him as a notable not listed on the ballot leads me to believe that he may well be on there. Not to mention, if he isn't, then your beef should also be with the Fox news reporter who didn't list him as one of the important omissions, right?

Just saying.

Rolling Stone Best Singer Scandal

Leave it to Rolling Stone, the magazine we boycott because of Jann Wenner’s tragic mishandling of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame every year.

In November, Rolling Stone is going to publish a list of the all-time best singers. It doesn’t matter if they’re dead or alive, active or retired, in their prime or over the hill. It’s just a free-for-all of names listed on a ballot and sent to Wenner’s friends.

Voters are asked to select "20 top singers, in order of preference. Among the criteria to take into account: originality, stage presence, influence and, most important, vocal ability."

That last one must be why Justin Timberlake, Aaliyah and Perry Ferrell are on the same ballot as Whitney Houston, Paul Rodgers and James Taylor.

But it’s a list, you say, and these lists are simply marketing tools designed to infuriate readers and stimulate sales. Right you are. But if they’re going to do a list, regardless of their so-called winner, maybe "the Bible" (ho ho) of rock 'n' roll should try not to forget significant names.

Missing from the three pages supplied by the magazine are a nice chunk of talented singers, starting most glaringly with Phoebe Snow, the undisputed best stylist of her generation, and Phillippe Wynn, the lead singer who made the Spinners’ hits such as "I’ll Be Around" and "Could It Be I’m Falling in Love" immortal classics.

Also absent are Johnny Mathis; Billy Preston; Kenny Loggins; Deniece Williams; Isaac Hayes; Carla Thomas; Gene Chandler; Richie Sambora; Jerry Butler; Julia Fordham; Marilyn McCoo; James Carr; Luther Ingram; Ann Peebles; Walter Jackson; Jennifer Warnes; Don McLean; Reba McIntyre; Martina McBride; Al Wilson; Mary Wilson; Peter Cetera; Glenn Tilbrook; Paul Carrack; Dave Edmunds; Nick Lowe; Graham Parker; Joe Jackson; Harry Wayne Casey (KC of the Sunshine Band); Gloria Gaynor; and Alison Moyet.

Just in case you’re wondering, in addition to the usual suspects of rock (all the Sirs, Eagles and Pink Floyd), it’s good to know that Wenner, who signed the letter, thinks these people are better singers than anyone on the above list: Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vince Neil of Motley Crue, Geddy Lee, PJ Harvey and Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance.

By the way, only one "American Idol" contestant is on Wenner’s list: Kelly Clarkson. Fantasia and the others be damned.

Laughable. So is the author. I love Motley, but Vince Neil is the shits as a singer.

Vince Neal's on there because RS is promoting their new record. Give me a break. Listen to MC's early albums. He couldn't find the pitch if his life depended on it. Ugh. Horrible.

Petey Cetera gets honorable mention, but nothing for Steve? Blowhard fuckwards. Now I hate RS more than ever.

Okay...let's try this one more time:

Now you're scaring me. Read the article again...the list you are commenting on IS NOT the Rolling Stone list. It's the Fox News authors list of who they think should be on the list. The RS ballot IS NOT PRINTED IN THE STORY.

Good lord...

Agreed! :x

I remember reading in RS that all the "Corporate Rock" bands were so similar, that you might as well call the groups "Reo JourneyWagon"...

...and NO ONE would know the difference!

Relax, dude. It's a logical assumption if you read the title. Put it back in your pants.

Geez...I thought the title thread said that the Rolling Stones had the greatest lead singer ever    Jagger can't sing to save his life, so thank god that isn't the case

As mentioned below, this wasn't RS's list.

And frankly, I'm annoyed that neither Perry, nor Cetera, nor the MANY, MANY others Fox listed aren't on the list.

Speaks to Rolling Stone's "anti'corporate' rock" bias.

What? You personally can sing better? Let's hear it!

Seriously folks ... I agree it sucks that Perry isn't mentioned (and he should be) but all the other attacks on other singers are kind of silly.

Attacks on other singers are NOT silly when the other singers in question are people like Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake, and douchebags from pop-punk bands.

A list of "all-time best singers" with THEM on it, and lacking greats like Perry, DeYoung, Meat Loaf, Bruce Springsteen, Sammy Hagar, Geoffrey Tate, Robert Plant, etc....

...is just despicable.

Attacks are silly when crazy statements like "can't sing to save their life" are mentioned. That's just plain silly. Not in disagreement that there are too many greats left off that list. Not in disagreement that there are singers off the list that I prefer who are on the list.

American Idol aside, musical tastes aside, Kelly Clarkson (who you cite) can absolutely sing to save her life. Even if you don't like her music or think she should be on the list, I'm pretty certain that if it came to a singing match between you and her, she'd kick your ass, my ass and about everyone's ass in this forum across the floor. Unless you'd like to prove me wrong ...? Timberlake? Can't stand him or his music. But moron or not, he can carry a tune a heck of a lot better than I can.

Clarkson has a very good natural singing voice and has listenable songs, yes. From what I've heard from Timberlake, his stuff is pretty stale.

Anyway.. no matter how great of a voice Clarkson has, fact of the matter is, she is nowhere near the "total package" that MANY other singers are. Who has she influenced? How big is her body of work? How versatile is she? What place in music history does she have, other than being the first American Idol winner?

That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. I stand by my comment that Jagger is a shit vocalist. As far as your litmus test being whether or not I can sing better...that is just dopey, or "silly", as you put it! I'm not a professional singer and never claimed to be.

Either way, I'd bet you could outsing Jagger. I agree, he was never much of a vocalist.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.
