OT--Dennis DeYoung still good...

Postby lights1961 » Tue Jul 22, 2008 12:20 am

Saw Dennis DeYoung at RIBFEST AMERICA in Des Moines this past Friday--- HIS VOICE is still amazing

Opened with Grand Illisusion closed with Come Sail Away. the NEW SONG IS KICK ASS.
100 years from now--is that right? anyway its an amazing song. 25 years ago it would be number one in USA... I cant imagine that happening now.

Suite Madam Blue was aweaome and Castle Walls was phenominal-- Lorelie, Lady,Babe, Best of Times, MR Roboto...... anong a few others... THE BAND IS okay---IT would be like seeing Steve Perry with out Journey... something was missing... Out of 10 I give the show a 6.5

I saw Dennis DeYoung in Columbus in 2004 at the Palace Theater -- thoroughly enjoyed his performance. No doubt he still has his pipes, that's for sure.

I saw him in May at the Cleveland Rib Fest. His band kicks ass this time around and Dennis himself is still in tip top shape, physically and vocally. Here's MOST of the review I wrote over on the Styx board [struck some comparisons between DDY and current Styx to keep this thread on topic]:

Here was the review I wrote:

Just got in, and goddamn if that wasn't one of the best shows I've seen in years. At 61, Dennis might be sounding better than I've heard him on any live recording or anything all the way back to the 70s. What's more is that I'm pretty sure he was nursing a cold, as he put on another jacket over his first one and kept running off to the side of the stage to blow his nose. I don't know how the guy's doing it, but his relatively clean lifestyle and obviously being in decent shape have really helped him keep it up. The show was mixed unbelievably well too... nothing got drowned out or got too loud as the night went on. The band this time around killed the line-up I saw when he was with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra... having that 2nd guitar player there made a huge difference - those guys sounded heavy and rockin. Here's the set list best I can remember in no order (I'm sure I'm forgetting some..)

Grand Illusion
Lady
Pieces of Eight w/ classical breakdown (almost felt like a TSO song)
Desert Moon - Killer extended solo outro from Tommy making an already tasteful guitar song even better/more emotional
Lorelei
One Hundred Years From Now (much better live)
This Time Next Year (ROCKED live)
Castle Walls (why did Styx never play this - a mystery)
The Best of Times
Come Sail Away
Babe
Light Up
Rockin The Paradise
Mr. Roboto
Show me The Way acapella w/ Susan, the other backup girl (you know, the smokin hot one), and the bass player.
Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue (what a treat hearing Prelude)

Well, that's about all I remember.. I'm sure I'm leaving one or two out. Highlights of the show were probably Castle Walls, Tommy's Desert Moon solo, and staring at the backup singer all night. But there wasn't a single song that sounded off at all. The two new songs went over pretty well considering most of the people there hadn't heard them - I wouldn't have minded 4 from the 100 Years really. The only other thing I missed was the inclusion of maybe one or two more old solo songs - Don't Wait for Heroes, Suspicious, Black Wall, or Harry's Hands would have suited me quite well. Here's to hoping Dennis doesn't wait another 4 or 5 years to come back to Cleveland. If he comes your way, don't miss out.

I think DDY's band is outstanding, particularly the two guitarists and the bass player. The guitarists play differently than JY or Tommy, but they were real good and had great tones. The extended Desert Moon outro was one of the most heartfelt combinations of melody and technical skill I've seen from a guitarist, and I've seen Schon, John Petrucci, Satch, Vai, Yngwie, Eric Johnson, and almost every prominent melodic rock guitar band out there, so that's saying quite a bit.

Perry's backing bands, from the live footage I've seen, were always somewhat underwhelming for the most part. I think it's unfair to DDY's lineup to compare them to any of Perry's backing bands.

I ALMOST got to sing that song with 7th Heaven the other night, but we arrived a bit too late. There will be another time. :)

I would love to see DD live sometime, and hope to have the opportunity.

Having seen Styx for the first time last month and then the second time this month, I'd love to see DDY to get the full effect.

The only way you'll be able to get that is to buy the "Return To Paradise" DVD. Great performance.

So much for the other remaining members' assertions that Dennis doesn't want/like to rock! Holy cow, just look at that setlist! I am so envious-don't know if he's ever going to play in my area.

I saw DDY at the Aronoff Center in doowntown Cincinnati about 4 yrs ago. There was a 50 piece orchestra and his wife sang backup and his sister in law was exceptional. There is a DVD of it and it was the Hunchback of Notre Dame opera he wrote. Then I saw him 2 yrs ago at the Taste of Blue Ash and again a spectaculer show. The next night we got to see Peter Cetera. Dennis is huge in Canada !

I remember a few years ago I saw him at the Civic Center in Des Moines. I looked back and saw the venue was only half full. I knew that he would never play there again.

Now, in the same week that LRB/REO are doing a concert, and Heart a few days later, at Prairie Meadows, the local casino, DDY is playing a 'rib fest'. Definitely puts things in perspective.

He is a great song writer, his voice always annoyed me, that weird vibrato [not roboto} Would get on my nerves, the music always made up for it

Oy...Monker saw him what...8 years ago. Geez, he's doing fine, the band's doing fine. Go see who you like. Love how crowd size is used by both "sides" as either not important or the whole point. Kind of like pointing out hits and saying they don't matter. Like what you like...cuz these guys just aren't gonna be doing this forever.

His set list is so much better than the outfit out there calling themselves Styx...You also forgot he plays Don't Let It End too.

New Styx doesn't touch half these songs.
