OT: "PUNISHER: War Zone" Trailer

Postby Rip Rokken » Sat Jun 14, 2008 9:28 am

If there is one thing X-Factor and I agree on, it's our love for comic book movies! Here's the first trailer for the new Punisher movie. Not quite sure what I think yet, especially with The Hitman-style action, but I'll definitely be there. Hope the body count is thru the roof!

LOL No. Thomas Jane Image

I found this on a blog. Its a letter from Jane to a friend.

Quint,

I’m writing to tell you that I regretfully and painfully had to pull out of P2. I can’t tell you how completely broken up I am about it. After busting my ass at the gym four days a week for almost two years, watching every character driven action pic that any fan would ask me to watch while I was standing in line buying egg whites and Tuna fish (Leon the Professional, Oldboy, The Seven-Ups (GREAT flick), Point Blank, Escape from NY, The Driver, Magnum Force, The Mechanic, The Great Silence, Sexy Beast, Nighthawks, Cry Vengeance (check it out), Road Warrior, Man on Fire, Outlaw Josey Wales, Rocky (think about it), Serpico, etc etc etc.) after countless Saturday nights making notes and drinking soda water and munching on seaweed sticks while my daughter slept on my lap to the sound of automatic gunfire, (now she can’t sleep without it. I had to make a tape of automatic gunfire to play in her room at night) after hauling myself to any ‘Guns! Knifes! Ammo!’ show in any small town that I found myself in shooting Killshot or The Mist or Mutant Chronicles, after torn ligaments, screwed up rotator cuffs, thousands of $$$ on ridiculously huge vitamins, overly long conversations with frighteningly tall men about The Fastest Way To Kill Someone With Your Bare Hands, and after a dude refused to sell me a Fatburger at 2am on Santa Monica Blvd, I am, sadly – no, make that heartbrokenly – fuck it - just rip out the heart and stomp it into the pavement a couple of times – pulling out. Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves.

I'm sharing this with you because I know you're a fan, like me, and you've got your ear to the ground, and because we seem to share the same sort of taste and passion when it comes to movies and stories that get us off. What I won't do is spend months of my life sweating over a movie that I just don't believe in. I’ve always loved the Marvel guys, and wish them well. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to search for a film that one day might stand with all those films that the fans have asked me to watch.

Sincerely,
Thomas Jane

I liked Ray Stevenson in Rome on HBO. It'll be interesting to see him in this...

He looks more like the punisher character, but I don't have high hopes for the script, and subsequently, the movie. I was under the impression this was going direct to DVD though? Is it being released to theaters?

I remember reading that letter when it was first sent to aintitcool.com, and was sad. I do think Ray Stevenson has a great look for Punisher, and probably looks more like the classic comic character, though Tim Bradstreet had apparently modeled some of his comic art after Tom Jane to begin with (I think this is true -- correct me if not).

I've heard mixed things about the script, and mostly not good, but I'll reserve judgment for when I see it. Did you catch the shot of Jigsaw in the trailer? You can see him from the back and side of the head.

Hey, we agree on SOME other things too! :D

I haven't heard about this one. MARVEL isn't doing it, I take? I actually never saw the first one, as it got such piss poor reviews.

Damn, though- I'm still giddy over THE INCREDIBLE HULK!!

Now, if only MARVEL can somehow take over the XMEN franchaise from FOX...ah, a man can dream, I suppose!

No, it's well worth the watch. Definitely not all it could be, but still worth the watch. They based it on Garth Ennis' "Welcome Back Frank" story, so lots of the characters like Stanley Bumpo and Spacker Dave are there. But I'd highly suggest watching the expanded director's cut edition, as it adds quite a bit to the story. Much like Daredevil -- once that entire extra subplot was added, it really filled out the film!

So, with everything Thomas Jane said about how heart-broken he was, he didn't give a reason. So WHY did he drop out?

I remember his open letter to AICN when they first posted it, and I think someone did up top as well. Going from memory, but I think he said he couldn't do something he "just didn't believe in". I took it that he was disappointed in the script and the direction they wanted to take. I do also remember they had a very hard time nailing down a decent script, and once they did, I read a HORRIBLE script review several months ago. Based on all this info, my fear is that the movie will be very direct-to-video quality, and full of cliche's -- I certainly hope that's not the case, but am crossing my fingers.

Ok, thank you. In that case, I am glad to hear that Jane is sticking up for his beliefs. Seems like if he had signed contracts to be in this movie than he could be penalized for dropping out of it. All the more reason to applaud his convictions!

No problem, and yes, someone did repost his message above -- the relevant portion being:

"Punisher fans are already fighting an uphill battle as it is. And I’ve always felt a responsibility to fight that fight for them and with them so that Frank Castle gets the treatment he deserves.

I read ll of the letter but all he states is that he does not believe in it. I guess I was looking for a little info about WHY he didn't believe in it. But it makes sense that it could be script or budget...

Sounded like they weren't respecting the character, or giving the sequel the budget or treatment it deserved. I mean, the trailers certainly look cool, but I know many people think there was much more that could be done with the Jane version, and it didn't get great box office. They really needed to knock one out of the park with a sequel.
