I understand he's a recluse but it irks me that people always fawn over his stage presence which to me was the weakest part of his act, and in the same breath take Arnel to task even though he physically interacts with the audience.

I always thought he went back there during guitar solos and instrumental sections so Neal or Jon would be in the spotlight, just like he never went back to the riser when Smitty did his solo part.

Loved the restraining order line, though!

My thoughts too, MJ!!!
That is something AP is getting better at!!!

A quick question of ignorance from a relatively new member... :?:
I know a loon officially means a crazy person elsewhere...
But what exactly does it mean here at the MR world? Who coined or used it first here? I'm sure a new thread is not needed to explain this! :D

I wasn't a big fan of his quasi break-dancing moves.

I agree that he jumps around to much. It bothers me vocally more the anything else. But by stage presence I meant that he owns the songs and the performance.

Meh,,,,I don't see it. I think he tries too hard.

Explain please! Seriously, what does that mean? Arnel is a performer and thats what he get paid to do. SP ran all over the place and did his little circle dance, which is cool 8) Was he trying to hard ? SA moved around a little bit, was he not trying enough? :?

Are you HIGH, G-Boy?....or should I say WERE you high!!

Actually the second time I saw Journey I was getting high in the last row against the wall, behind the stage. Perry's anti social behavior worked in our favor since he was always facing our direction :D No one's saying Arnel is a better singer then Perry. We're talking about the people who bag on Arnel's stage presence. I think Arnel is more active and interacts just as well if not better then Perry did. When you sing as well as Perry did, you didn't have to be the most dynamic guy on stage (or the best looking obviously). His voice made all that irrelevant. But there is no need to degrade Arnel's abilities on stage. The guy is proving to be a showman in his own right, much to the chagrin of certain people who just can't wait for him to fail.

Now, just a minute! "Perry's anti-social behavior"??????

He deflects the spotlight off himself when instruments are being played and, yes, to give himself a rest. When he is singing, and the spotlight is on him, he is all over the place.

Disclaimer: I have never been to a concert show back in the day; derived at this conclusion by looking at dozens of videos and clips recorded for posterity (thank you, God!).

As for SP not being the best looking of the bunch ..., I beg to differ. Not much care for the long hair/polyester fashions phase. During Frontiers and ROR, however, he was the handsomest and sexiest looking of them all.

There were audio problems with the live feed, but more importantly he seemed to shriek a bit at times and seemed a bit overwhelmed by his surroundings at others. That said, he has progressed to the point now that I thought he would somehwere toward the end of the tour. He's confident, strong, comfortable and seems to have found his way as a frontman. His voice has remained strong and he has learned to cut a lot of the notes short rather than trying to impress by oversinging. His diction continues to improve as does his phrasing and timing in and out of songs. All in all, I think he has done an amazing job and has stepped into the role of Steve Perry's replacement and being the new original vocalist in a professional and dignified manner. I hear is work ethic is second to none and he realizes how important the legacy is to the fans. Shit, if it was not important to us, we wouldn't be here beating the shit out of each other!

Anyway, I decided against a poll because I think it gives people an easy way out. You can vote that he's a "10" or vote that he's a "1" without logically giving your reasons. This way, you have to substantiate your claims or stay on the sidelines like a little bitch. :P As of right now, all things considered, I give Arnel Pineda a 91 out of 100 and Journey as a whole a 90...both an A-. Anyone else?

One question, SJ. What do you mean by "being the new original vocalist"?

Good question...I think that becoming the lead singer of Journey has 2 specific purposes; being able to sing the old songs the way people remember them and forging forward with new original music that maintains the core sound but is unique enough that it doesn't seem "cloned." I think Arnel possesses the ability to sound like Perry, but when he sings in his own voice he is a high tenor...but one that is easily distinguishable from Perry.

Still a passing grade.

Sorry Nat...I don't agree. Arnel hits notes that Steve Augeri couldn't hit to save his life, and notes that simply aren't in Jeff's range. The glaring missing item for Arnel, Jeff, Augeri, and a singer to be named later, is that there is simply no connection to the lyrics they're singing. These songs were written during a different time, by different people, who had a deep connection to the lyrics. There is simply no replacing that, even though they've been trying like hell, forever! I love Arnel's talent, but it is just VERY, VERY odd to hear this guy sing a song about San Francisco (Lights)... a city he's probably still never even been to

John from Boston

Perfect....

The songs might sound good however the emotion in the old tunes (not every song has to be fucking emotional however) can not be replicated, duplicated or faked in any way. Still good but magical ? Never again....On the old tunes that is. Arnel sings most of the new tunes from his heart and I like what I hear.

Not sure if these have been posted before, but here are some young Arnel clips from the grave:

singing Listen To Your Heart by Roxette:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQvAlze2 ... re=related

while in Hong Kong circa 2001:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmbW5P2y ... re=related

Singing with a singer who became famous in Asia while Arnel got stuck until his hair grew long enough for his neal in shining armor to rescue him from the zoo or so we think...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=521BVB6R ... re=related

Then compare that 3rd clip with this original and see how Arnel can't hold a candle :D

I remember seeing the LTYH clip here and one from the late 80's. Hadn't seen one of the others.

Seems like he's been singing professionally forever.

Maybe it's a precautionary Birth control measure for people that tend to be frisky.

this is a clear example of someone who's just trying to emulate somebody and doesn't comprehend at all what comes out of her mouth. yet some people are doubting AP's english comprehension, diction and make fun of his accent. I mean "WHEEL in DISGUISE" is acceptable and could be due poor audio listening but "KEN LEE, TULIBU DIBU DOUCHOO" is just too much.

* point is if a person could speak 4 lines of simple English and is comprehendable by the listening audience, there is no doubt that person understands English very well.
