Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco, California in 1973.

The band has gone through several phases since its inception by former members of Santana. The band's greatest commercial success came in the late 1970s through the early 1980s with a series of power ballads and songs such as "Don't Stop Believing", "Any Way You Want It", "Faithfully", "Open Arms", "Separate Ways", and "Wheel in the Sky."

Journey has been eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 2000, but Gregg Rolie is currently the only member of Journey who has been inducted—as a member of parent band Santana. In 2009, Steve Perry, the band's best-known lead vocalist, will be eligible for induction as a solo artist.

I don't think "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart" are gonna be quite enough to get him in.

I think that a large part of it has to do with being influential. It's his middle name.   Go ahead. Tell me he isn't!

Yeah it is... LOL! But... influential as a solo artist, no. He was a solo artist for two albums... he wasn't on Madonna or Michael Jackson level. He changed JOURNEY so on that, yes, but that's part of the Journey success. 1 double platinum isn't gonna do it. Unless I'm missing something heavy in the criteria or the nomination history.

Evolution. In fact, it's near the top of my all time favorite Journey albums. Why?

The band was more cohesive sounding on this album. Smitty's drumming, Neal was still playing with a lot of the "early intensity" (i.e. Lovin You Is Easy) and the songwriting was solid. Throw in Gregg's talent and Ross on bass and this is a gem. Perhaps it is why to this day Captured Live is still my favorite live Journey album. There are a bunch of tunes from Evolution on that recording.

Infinity, Evolution and Departure are all fantastic albums. Some would argue that Journey peaked with Escape. Probably true, but there has been a lot of good work from Escape to present day.
It's All Good...

Currently, groups or individuals are qualified for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Nominees should have demonstrable influence and significance within the history of rock and roll. Four categories are recognized: Performers, Non-Performers, Early Influences, and since 2000, Sidemen. However, fans have no input concerning who is nominated or elected to the hall.

I think that Perry fits into one or two of these categories. As a performer I feel that he has demonstrable influence and he most certainly has significance within the history of rock and roll.
Where is it written that only an artists solo WORK is considered?

If he has come to that time to be considered, I'm in his corner without reservation. I really don't think that too many people would be surprised if he made the team. It's not like there are expectations but there would be many who would say, "Oh hell yes. I'm not surprised."
This time you are saying no and I am saying maybe, lol.
PEACE!
