OT - Instrumental or mostly instrumental CDs

Postby Diffworlds » Fri Aug 29, 2008 11:41 am

Can anyone recommend a good pop/rock instrumental or mostly instrumental CD? All the artists seem be doing jazz/fusion stuff, but I would like a nice straight ahead pop/rock collection. Any help would be appreciated.

My favorite instrumental albums of all time are Joe Satriani's "Surfing With the Alien", John Petrucci's "Suspended Animation", and Neal's "Beyond the Thunder". Of course, that last one is smooth jazz but I still love it.

Gary Schutt --loss4words. www.garyschutt.com or cdbaby. Newly released in July. only 1 jazz--ish song out of the 17. 2 ballads. Neal plays on ROAD TRIP, as does Oz Fox of Stryper and Jon Finn. it can be truly classified as pop/rock instrumental. guitar, btw.

Neal's I on U is cool. not really jazzy. not very rock-y either, tho'. it's really nice. well, I guess it's new age. but I love it.

that's all i got. :?

You gotta check out:

Personal Favorite: Michael Landau - 'Tales From the Bulge'

Also - Tim Pierce - Guitar Land

There are others, but those seem to fit the description of what you're looking for.

cheers

opps forgot that one too. i've got it and it stars our own RV.

(and the Neil guy..  )

I guess you could include Ross' VTR but it is classified as jazz but it is not 'seriouly' jazz. ya know what I mean? very listenable-not complicated or lengthy. excellent if you love soft jazz. Neal plays on one track, too.

Thanks for the advice. I have placed Michael Landau, Joe Sartriani, Gary Schutt & Brad Gillis on the wishlist or ordered. Amazon wants $40 for Tim Pierce! Loved his work with Springfield, Scheff but does anyone know someplace cheaper? I had Neal's I on U so that will hold me over for a bit. Maybe compile a mixed Cd until some of the above come in. A little Jan Hammer, Neal Schon, Toto had one or two good instrumantals.

Thanks again.

Stand outs on the Gary Schutt cd are Loss 4 Words- a beautiful ballad, and Road Trip, featuring Neal. I love Kitten with an Attitude!! but it is a bit jazzy. Skyline is a very listenable track--technically amazing if you listen 'deep'.

but there is not a clicker in the whole set! 8)

just my $.02 :D
