OT-Metallica's Death Magnetic on track to sell 500K

Metallica's new album, Death Magnetic, is on track to sell 500,000 copies in the U.S. in its first, shortened week of release, according to Hits Daily Double. The CD was released worldwide on Friday (September 12th), although almost all albums are issued in the U.S. on Tuesdays. The group's last studio effort, 2003's St. Anger, was pushed up to a Thursday, June 5th release from its original arrival date of June 10th to combat Internet leaks. The record ended up selling 418,000 copies in that short release window, adding another 363,000 in its first full week on shelves.

Meanwhile, fans who purchased a special box set edition of Death Magnetic in the U.K. must have been surprised to find it missing one thing: the CD itself. Many of the boxes, which were priced at the British equivalent of $124.99, were also missing a limited edition lithograph, according to Undercover News. North American editions of the release were not affected.
Metallica played a record release show on Friday at the new O2 World arena in Berlin, Germany, becoming the first musical act to appear at the newly opened venue. The band aired out five tracks from Death Magnetic, including "That Was Just Your Life," "The End of the Line," "Broken, Beaten and Scarred," "Cyanide" and "The Day That Never Comes."
All proceeds from the Berlin show were donated to a local charity.

Gold in less then a week is awesome whether they sound like shit or not. I think the Eagles did 700,000 their first week on their Walmart release so these numbers for a old headbanger band are great in this day and age. Count down to platinum starts now.

Metallica's Number One debut on the Billboard album chart with its new album, Death Magnetic, has made history. The Number One arrival makes Metallica the only band to have five albums debut in the top spot, breaking a tie at four albums held by the Beatles, U2 and the Dave Matthew Band. Death Magnetic is also Metallica's fifth consecutive studio effort to enter at Number One, following 1991's self-titled "black album," 1996's Load, '97's Reload and 2003's St. Anger. The album sold 490,000 copies in just four days of release, arriving in stores last Friday (September 12th) instead of the usual Tuesday.

Death Magnetic also debuted at Number One in countries all over the world, including Argentina, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the U.K., Holland, Norway, Poland and Sweden.
All the tracks on Death Magnetic, including a special "extended" version of the song "Suicide and Redemption," are available simultaneously for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour, which is coming out this October.

Metallica will kick off its indoor North American tour on October 21st in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

Bit harsh, don't you think Stockton? I know what you mean about the lack of originality but I actually think the album is pretty good. I went to see Metallica earlier this week and some of the new tunes - such as The Day That Never Comes - stood up well next to the classics.

Having said that...the five star reviews everywhere are a bit much...and I think maybe we're seeing a similar situation to te the one when Revelation came out: fans badly wanting to believe the glory days have returned and talking themselves into a high. Like with the Journey record, I probably won't play Death Magnetic that much over the next few months...

It's kind of a fine line. Metallica tries something different and they're labeled as sell-outs, but they go back to the original formula that made them famous and it's recycled garbage.

I think this album rocks, and by the number of albums sold, I'm not alone in that assessment.

I'm loving the shit out of it as well. After a tough day at work, it's the perfect CD to get some aggression out. This CD has an in your face immediacy with max agression. Love it!
