Lately I've been real iffy on play calling in the NFL...I'm a firm believer in Offensive play calling being the LONE reason for losses in the NFL. Granted whatever play IS called, the other team stops it. Gotta give some credit threre, but most often it is the wrong call in the situation.
Back to the hot read. Any time there is a blitz on a pass play - there should be a WR close for the dump off. ALWAYS. I've seen Peyton do that SO MANY times in the past 7-8 years. Other teams, not so much.
Coaches/play calling are responsible for AT LEAST a third of a teams losses.
Oh yah.. in most cases it's the Quarterback/Receiver responsibility to recognize what defense the defense is in and recognize where the blitz is coming from or figure out where the soft zone is or if it is man to man or where the safety is on the field. That's what offensive coordinators are for, to figure out what the D is doing, but in most cases it changes at the last second since defense's move around so much.
In practice The receiver and Quarterbacks go over most of their hot reads by mostly watching film on that team and if they see something they've seen on film a simple wink or a simple look or eye contact will indicate a go route or whatever they discussed as the hot read. So it all depends if the Quarterback and Receiver recognize the defense and are on the same page with each other.
This happened last night with Warners' TD pass to Fitzgerald on 4th down and 2 where the original offense runs its original play but the Quarterback and receiver run the hot read. 2 weeks Byron Leftwhich hit Santonio Holmes for a TD in Washington in this case also.
