Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

We got my mum's test results back today; it's definately cancer, they're just not sure if it's a reoccurance/spread of the uterine cancer, or something new. The good news is, it looks the tumour is discrete and they will operate to remove it sometime in the next week or so (she's got an infection they need to clear up first). The bad news is, we won't know how bad the situation is until they open her up.

With luck, they'll whip it out whole, give her some prophylactic chemo for a few months and all will be well. That's what we're both assuming is going to happen, and if it doesn't, then... well, we'll think about that only when and if we have to.

I'm taking my own advice, though - through Facebook I had found some old primary school friends I haven't seen since we were about 19. We've all chatted briefly on-line, but haven't done anything about meeting up yet. So I'm organising a meet-for-coffee with them all in a few weeks time, so we can all get together, reconnect and hopefully reforge our old childhood friendships.

Again, thanks for all your positive wishes. To those who sent prayers, even though I'm not a believer, thank you for the care and spirit with which they are sent. And please, keep filling me in with what you are doing - it's been a real boost for me to hear the few stories filtering back.

Ari still saying prayers here hon.And i am going to get back in touch with a very dear sister/friend.She's not my sister but like one. Will let you know how it goes. We all need that jump start i think.

Update.

Postby Arianddu » Sat Nov 15, 2008 1:49 pm

Hi all,

some of you asked me to let you know how it went, so a quick update (and thanks again to everyone who's been sending care and good thoughts!)

Mamma got operated on last Monday to remove the tumour. They had to cut her up pretty badly to remove it all, but fortunately there was no attachment to her intestines, so although she's uncomfortable (and lost her belly button!) there aren't going to be long-term complications from the surgery.

Yesterday (Friday) we finally got confirmation of what sort of cancer it is. Unfortunately, it is a secondary cancer; the uterine cancer she had earlier in the year had spread to her adrenal gland. That's the bad news.

The good news is it's a type of cancer that shows up very easily under CAT scan, so the doctors are confident that they got everything, and that there aren't any other secondary cancers at the moment, and if any more do grow, they will be picked up and dealt with early while they are small.

We're both relieved that we finally know what's going to happen, and that makes a difference. This Wednesday the specialists meet to work out what sort of chemo she'll have, and then the following Wednesday she'll start treatment. It's going to be a long haul with no guarantees, but Mamma's quietly confident that she's going to beat this, and we have a good network of friends and family to support us.

Just remember - take the time to look out for the ones you love! None of us are going to be here forever, don't let regrets you could have avoided taint your life.

Adrianddu, I'm glad you finally know. The prognosis seems good for your mom in that it had not spread any further than that and that they were able to remove it. Even though it was secondary, hopefully, it stays contained in that area. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers during your mom's recovery from the surgery and her treatment.

Thanks for the update, Ari; it's great that the surgery is behind here and that the prognosis is good.

Arianddu my prayers are with you.my mother had a brain aneurysm in late august on her birthday here at my house within minutes of me getting off from work.she was visiting her grandchildren here spending the night and i called my girlfriend to unlock our door to let me in that morning i could suddenly hear noise in the background and my girlfriend said my mom was having some problems and she was calling for an ambulance.well they got her to the hospital and hours later it was a ten percent chance of survival which is not good chances.well my mom made it out but she is not the same person and she is sometimes slow and she complains how she hates being the way she is but i told her just to be thankful she is alive and to try and improve and get better.
