I am confused. Why is Lou Gramm touring as himself, and Foreigner is touring with Kelly Hansen? I have heard that Lou's voice is back in top shape. What happened between Lou and Mick?

Hey Jer, since it fits, I quoted RedJoe's post from the Foreigner forum.

Hard for me to achieve buy-in for what seems like more The Mick Jones All-Star Band Plays Foreigner as actually being Foreigner but I also have the feeling that if it were up to Mick, Lou would still be in the band.

I really think Gramm is on his own by choice.

With Lou in the band they'd be a bigger draw but Gramm's releasing a supposedly Christian based album. If that's the case his motivations are beyond just keeping Foreigner alive.

I don't think his voice is 100% back but it is very near there.

I can't remember where I read it but in a newspaper interview a few years ago, Lou related that Mick and his working relationship ended after their performance at Night of the Proms in Belgium in 2003. According to Lou, they had a hotel room set up for recording and were gonna work on some ideas for the upcoming Foreigner album. Lou said he was excited because this was the first time since his operation when he felt significantly creative, stating that that part of his brain had been "turned off" since the operation, and he was able to write some lyrics and a vocal melody to a piece of music that Mick had written. Mick was reportedly thrilled and kept saying to Lou, "You're back, Lou, you're back!"

When it came time to lay down vocals for the demo they were working on, Mick handed Lou some lyrics and when Lou asked what they were for Mick said, "Lou, your lyrics were good but I think mine are a little bit better for this song." Lou replied, "Well, Mick, I've got this microphone all warmed up for you, and if you wanna write the lyrics then you'll sing them, too." According to Lou, Mick then got up, knocked over the microphones they had set up, and left, slamming the door. That was the last time they spoke until Lou's dad, i think, passed away some time later and Mick called to give his condolences.

This is all from memory, but I remember Lou saying he couldn't believe that after little to no creativity from him for the last eight years, he then feels inspired again and Mick refuses his contribution to what they were working on.

I wish I could find the original article but I was really surprised that this is how everything went down.

Jones' needed to cut Gramm some slack and just roll with it, esp over some lyrics. . After seeing what Gramm did on his own and SK, he's just as good without Jones anyway.

I Need to know - WHY did REM cover this song? I love Midnight Blue and i like REM too but i see them as a new wave band - are they taking the mickey here or is this a genuine cover of a song they like?

Hadn't heard that he had anything done to his chords. Just thought the change was a result of the illness. His voice doesn't have the higher range but still sounds strong in that clip.

Wonder if he losing some weight would make a difference?

I have read the same thing before, in was in Biloxi paper the week that Lou Gramm and his band played in Gulfport. It was an associate press article. At least the one I read.

He's lost some of the weight but he's obviously still heavier than he used to be. Dude was in great shape prior to the surgery.

It's probably a bit of both...I'm certain that additional fat on the vocal chords doesn't help. You can oftentimes tell when someone is fat by the sound of their voice. Not always but often.

It didn't hamper Ann Wilsons voice. I hate to use her as an example, but she's one of the better ones I can think of. If Lou had to take steroids during his illness, that could have done it. They supposedly thicken the vocal cords.

Here's a 2003 version of TWY with Foreigner. He voice is pretty rough at times. I think he's improved since then. less roughness in the delivery today.
