OT - Hey Prog - seen the new Marillion 6cd release?

Hey dude - you will love this - i have heard 3-4 tracks on the radio - all the gigs were from 82-87 and they are ALL fantastic - you can hear the band's hunger and their confidence growing over each disc. Very good quality sound too - its about £40 here - maybe will come in around $50-$60 over the pond? I dunno but its something i have dropped heavy hints about for Christmas........

Is their new album as good as advertised? Goldmine was really talking it up

I'm a Fish-era fan bigtime myself. Although I really like "80 Days" from This Strange Engine (I think?)

I'm a Fish fan too - although i have liked the odd track too - i have not heard it mate, but its had nothing but good reviews that i have seen - i guess the 6cd retrospective might hurt its sales, although they all score from any sales i suppose.

New Marillion album is pretty good, atlhough not as good as Marbles, IMO.


The box set is sweet if you're into the early stuff, although you have to be really hardcore to need more live material after Real To Real, Thieving Magpie, Recital Of The Script, and Live From Lorely, given they only made 4 studio albums with Fish. The performances themselves are great though, no denying that.

I think part of is just to get more live stuff from that era - so far away from it - gives a different perspective - and a lump to the throat when i heard Market Square Heroes - will never forget where i was the first time i heard that song - kinda like DSB.

Yeah, it's definitely a great listen, and it's nice to have recordings of the Script stuff with a different drummer. I know a lot of people are really attached to that first album, but I can't really get into it...Mick Pointer is AWFUL. I liked some of the songs a bit more once I heard them played with someone else behind the kit, although I don't think their songwriting really became focused until Misplaced Childhood.

I saw something about this the other day and immediately added it to the Christmas list. I know I'm going to love it.

Surprisingly, I have NOT listened to the newest Marillion album yet, even though I'm going to end up getting it for sure. I've been a bit behind in getting ahold of new music lately because my time has been more preoccupied with making new music of my own.

Also.. Fish-era Marillion is by far a top five favorite band of mine, while H-era Marillion is just a top fifty fave or so.... so I'm not as eager to snatch it up as I would've been, say, Clutching at Straws when it first came out.

There definitely was something special about the Fish era, but I also feel like they might have gone as far as they could go without becoming redundant. Even without the internal strife, I think they may have only had one or two good albums left in them...I think Hogarth took them down a path Fish would've never envisioned, but it kept them from repeating themselves and sounding like Genesis for their entire career like a lot of newer prog bands (IQ, The Flower Kings, etc).
