Does a 'GLOBAL' status chart exist similar to RIAA(U.S.)?

Postby jrnyjetster » Sun Dec 28, 2008 12:17 am

To continue on this discussion...is it strictly the RIAA here in the states that determines how successful an album/CD is? That doesn't seem right. :? Who determines 'WORLDWIDE' CD sales?

IFPI tallies up al the sales (cd and digital) and releases a report every year. This years report is out but I think you need to pay for it. Every country has it's own certification process which is on the IPFI site. Here is a list of last year's (2007) top 20. They are not showing the overall sales here but to give you an idea, Avril Lavine's digital sales alone were 7.5 million (which is on the site if you look around).

Here are some of the chart providers by territory

Journey is the 28th all time best selling act in the U.S. That's not bad at all when you look at the list.

I like some of his music, but I'm not anywhere near being a country fan. He outsold Elvis. That's unfuckingbelievable.

Had Garth Brooks not seemingly retired he would have easily been at the top. Dude was a record selling machine.

Remember though, he basically did this from 1989-2001. He officially quit touring and recording in 2000. Nobody has done shit like this...nobody  :

Brooks has released six albums that achieved diamond status in the United States, those being: Garth Brooks (10× platinum), No Fences (17× platinum), Ropin' the Wind (14× platinum), The Hits (10× platinum), Sevens (10× platinum) and Double Live (21× platinum).

Also of not is that he was the first person to ever sign with Walmart and his 6 disc collection saold over a million physical units. And if you think he doesn't still have selling power check this out:

On August 18, 2007, Brooks announced plans for a new boxed set called The Ultimate Hits. The new set features two discs containing 30 hits, three new songs, and a DVD featuring music videos for each of these songs. The album's first single, "More Than a Memory", was released to radio on August 27, 2007. "More Than a Memory" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming the highest-debuting single in the chart's history. The previous record had been set only one week earlier, when Kenny Chesney's "Don't Blink" debuted at #16.

Then, in November 2007, Garth Brooks performed nine shows over ten nights at the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. All nine shows sold out. Following his final performance, Brooks promised the sold-out crowd that if they "waited for him" he would return, leaving country fans across the world in anticipation for a comeback.

Rick, he's an Oklahoma boy. Born in Tulsa.

How much did Chris Gains sell?

He was one of the ones that didn't make it as an alias artist.

Reba was born in McAlester, where I'm from, but she sings shit country music. Deb and I do watch her sitcom though.

Garth is fuckin' awesome. Only country singer I like. I saw him during his 2-day run at Staples Center last January. It completely changed my standards for concerts... Journey is horrible onstage compared to him.
