The guy's an actor and a pretty good one if it involves weird characters. He's bland as himself.

He's obviously doing a bit ala Joaquin Phoenix for the publicity. The question is will it help or hurt the band?

Nah. River Phoenix on Letterman was clearly an act. This guy really does think he's the shit, and had previously instructed the producer of the radio show not to discuss his acting. He was genuinely pissed, and you can even see the uncomfortable body language of his band mates. They clearly wanted him to knock it off, or wanted to kill him. The fact that they have now canceled the tour probably says more about what was going on behind the scenes than we even know.
