Opera rock Jesus Christ Superstar 73'

Postby Carla777 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 1:02 pm

well i'm not a religious person, but now that is holy week, i remind this opera rock Jesus Christ Superstar, where the fantastic Ian Gillan play Jesus of Nazareth in the original version, was a beautiful version but i must admit that the artist that sing in the movie after him were really outstanding singers, my fav in the movie is Carl Anderson as Judas, the song is call Heaven on their minds, have a very catchy riffs at the beggining, the lyris are so good, and he sing with a lot of passion...for other part Teed Neeley as Jesus is awesome, the last part with the screaming give me chills, great movie!

I like very much the movies that show the human side of Jesus, like this one and others like The passion of christ or The Last temptation of christ with W. Dafoe.

Here goes some links from the movie (Carl Anderson, and T. Neeley)

oh and i found this other excellent version (i couldn't get the one with Gillan  )

Thank you for the reminder Carla - I must watch that this weekend, it is one of my favorite movies. I was fortunate enough to see the stage production in about 1993 or 1994 - that particular production had the original leads from the movie (Neeley and Anderson) and 20 years later they still sounded wonderful.

I have to admit - I have seen the movie so many times, listened to the soundtrack so many times - I am pretty sure I know every word to every song  . Luckily my husband is not here to listen to me singing along :) .

Wow - that's great - he's sings that with a lot of feeling.

I had actually forgotten that Carl Anderson passed away a few years ago :( - he was very talented. (And he looked very good in his white Judas jumpsuit when I saw him live, I think we were first or second row so had a real good view  )

i love the songs of JCS! i've seen both carl anderson & ted neeley on tour - not together though. you would think after all these years (decades!), they would grow tired of the same songs & slip into just going through the motions, but it seemed like they still had passion in them & every word & every note they sang sounded emotional & sincere. in 2002, sebastian bach was jesus with carl as judas. i think i totally lucked out & saw one of the few really good performances by bach. most of the reviews & youtubes i saw of him were pretty bad. a few years later, i saw ted neeley with corey glover as judas. i love corey's voice, but unfortunately, he seemed to be having a bad night & could barely croak out his songs.

I played the album relentlessly.... knew every song inside out. Love the play, loved the film. Neely could definitely hit some amazing notes.

I saw the Jesus Christ Superstar stage production with Ted Neeley many years ago and it WAS awesome. When the tour came to our town again a couple of years ago Ted, then in his early 60's I believe, was under the weather so the understudy stood in for him. Not nearly as good. It was a little embarrassing because just before the curtain went up, after it was announced that Neeley was under the weather, and he would be replaced by the understudy, there was a clearly audible groan from the audience. I felt bad for the guy.
