OT: Earthquake in the DFW area?

Postby Rick » Sun May 17, 2009 6:27 am

I didn't feel it, but evidently a lot of others did. My wife called me and said she certainly felt one. I passed it off as she might have felt the rumblings of thunder, as it's been raining pretty much all day. But then other people at work said they felt it. Someone said they were at a Target store in Grapevine and the clothing racks were wobbling and rattling.

I've heard reports of a 3.3 on the richter scale, centered in Euless, TX, but haven't heard anything official.

Well it's official.

EULESS -- A minor earthquake shook parts of North Texas but no damage nor injuries had been reported.

Jesse Moore with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said Saturday’s earthquake at 11:24 a.m. came in at 3.3, according to the National Earthquake Information Center.

Moore said he had not heard of any reports of damage nor injuries. Moore said the earthquake was centered about four miles south of Euless and 18 miles west of Dallas.

Robert Budack, who lives in Irving, told The Associated Press he was on his bed and got bounced to the wall, but was not hurt.

Budack said he felt an aftershock that “was enough to make the couch and chairs shake.”

Hmm. Looks like the USGS website is reporting a magnitude 3.3 earthquake centered near Euless around 11:24 am local time. Hmm...didn't feel a thing, eh Rick? :P

Nope, I was at work. The airport borders Euless, and I felt nothing.

you're not likely to feel a 3.3 if you're standing or moving. most 3.3s go unnoticed around here.

I suppose a 3.3 is relatively minor, as earthquakes go, but for places where earthquakes are rare, it's a bit unsettling - IF you feel it.

true & you people probably haven't taken some of the precautions we have. in earthquake country, pretty much anything that would fall over in a minor to moderate earthquake has either already fallen over or is secured in some way. makes me nervous when i travel & see things propped up on high shelves over areas in which i'm lounging or sleeping.

one way to test what items would fall over in an earthquake is to let a couple of athletic cats loose in the house. they're very good at pointing out the most breakable items.
