this 1979 kicks off with an instrumental and the debut of drummer steve smith.lots of great stuff here and also included the bands first top twenty single also.i think this one is very underrated and lots of great tunes on this one.

Not a fan of this one, actually.

Some seriously ass kicking Perry vocal performances, but I wasn't a fan of their sound. It was in a state of flux post-Infinity and pre-Escape where they were trying to combine progressive tunes with mainstream pop. I much prefer the formula they have now; definite pop ballads and then some classic rock. It seems to me that they were trying to cram both into each song.

Lovin' You Is Easy and Just The Same Way are good and so is Majestic. The rest is garbage. LTS is perhaps the worst song I've ever heard.

Now you've gone too far, sir. I love that song. As a matter of fact I was singing that one the other day. Could have been a lot ballsier if Perry wasn't singing like his junk was caught in a vice, but otherwise a great good-time rollicking bluesy number. Loved it the first time I heard it on the radio (although for the longest time I did think it was a woman singing - I was only 13yrs old)

its the one LP that can be played OVER AND OVER...
LTS with city of angels... WOW!! too late... yes... just the same way...double wow...
this one really brings back high school memories of playing pool in the basement of
friends house...

Smith makes a big improvement in the sound and direction of the band. The music becomes tighter, giving the music more focus and direction. So the two Steve's have made a big impact on the music.
Evolution starts of with the regal instrumental Majestic. A great opening for the cd, just wish this song could have been longer. Then moves quickly into Too Late, a song about getting a new start before you can't. Reminds me a little of the Lights mood, and kinda of weird the cd first full song is in the same mood and tone. But it is a good song, and the new drummer is very apparent.
Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin is a staple Journey song. The song has a great beat, Neal has good lick, and Perry pours the emotion into the song. The na na na...chorus ending usually has a room full people singing with, even now almost 30 years later. The live version I must say is even better, so catch the band in concert when you can.
Now the cd slips for me with the rocker City Of The Angels. It just never goes anywhere, to me just a noisy mess of a song. The same When Your Alone (It Ain't Easy). Again loud, but for what reason. I do not like Neal's guitar in this song. And Perry too seems to be loud just to be loud.
But thankfully, the next song brings the cd back in line. Sweet and Simple is just that, and Neal and Perry seems to be at a perfect match. Lovin You Is Easy, is an ok song, but the cd brings next a Rollie and Perry duet (for lack of a better word), that rocks. And is better than the two they did together on the last cd, INFINITY.
But again the cd fails to keep up the pace, and the closing last 3 songs are mediocre and best, Do You Recall, is the better of the last three. Daydream and Lady Luck are just poor songwriting.
Production is better on this cd. If the songwriting had been a little bet better, it would have put it on the same level as INFINITY. I guess the main difference between the two are, INFINITY had more songs that were better, and EVOLUTION had some that were very good, but also had so that were very weak. So I give the advantage to INFINITY.

Love this album. Doesn't have the same ambience as Infinity, but still a pleasure to listen to.

Loving you is easy, Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin', City of the Angels....Nice feel-good album.

No doubt about it. Great album.

This is the same band that released Frontiers, ROR and TBF? No way.

They thrashed his voice in just a couple years. Even Escape doesn't have the clean high notes of this album.

And the bass thumps kickin' off LTS always makes me think of late '70s parties. The cowbell on Do You Recall cinches it for me. LOL

My favorite Journey record. Perry is on his game showing his range with Gregg sharing the vocal duties. Smitty's pounding away and Neal has some rock in his guitar. What an awesome cd. The record opens with one of the greatest instrumentals ever ... and it rocks. I love it ...

This is one of those albums where hearing it live, with a faster tempo makes all the difference in the world to me. Do you Recall and Lovin you is easy really demonstrate this.

definitely the most underated Journey album. I love Too Late. I was listening to it in the car the other day, Man could Perry nail the high notes back in the early days.

if you were a teenager in 1979 this was just amazing... great follow up to infinty and no sophmore slump for Perry at all here.

To be honest, i saw the Evolution Tour and SP-Original Journey (This sucks, i have to label which Journey) anyway, they had as i remember like 4 intro's to songs that were awesome. To this day, i have never heard or seen them do that other than that night. SP fricken was a dam Monster with those intro's, Man what a voice. Sweet and Simple, Daydream, LTS was three that i remember. I still say to this day, the intro's (LIVE) are what separates him from anyone other singer in history. Yes, for those that have never had the chance to see SP early on in his untouchable career, he was a BEAST with Neil and the boys.
