Why didn't they do the new versions of some of the songs.....like SW, AWYWI....would have been nice to have them and would have showed more of a reason to re-record them

Good idea! They should record the new re-recorded versions and package them with the new upcoming CD. :D

Steve Perry agrees with you. Mo money, mo money. THough the DSB arrangement isn't new. The 2001 Las Vegas DVD has the same version.

You don't believe that song writers should receive compensation for there work being used over and over and over and over again?

Most likely because the live re-arrangements didn't exist yet.
What few changes do exist on the re-records are from how the band had been playing the songs live.
Including Neal's extended outro of WCN.
Remember, the band had a deadline to meet with the Revelation package.
Kevin Shirley put a million dollar polish on Disc 1, while Disc 2 was slapped together in Cain's garage.
Now that the Arnel-lineup is firmly established and doing well, the band saw it fit to update the dirty dozen.
At the outset, however, I think they just used Disc 2 to fulfill a contractual obligation and prove Arnel could deliver.

Indeed.

I, for one, would have enjoyed a recording of "Ask the Lonely." The way they close it live is much better than the studio version, with the duet between Cain and Schon at the end.

Good point.....its too bad though, because I like every single added/changed nuance they're doing.

I agree that disc 2 was done to help showcase Arnel's voice and to prove he had the chops for the job.

I think most of the modifications that we are now hearing around the world were most likely arranged during their extensive rehearsals in Manila. It seems most were played first at the Manila concert.

What does it matter??....the only reason they put those rerecords there in the first place, was to chart higher....

it was all a fucking sham from the get go.

They could have recorded 12 different versions of Mary had a little lamb (not SRV, but the nursery rhyme) and named them old journey songs, and the effect would have been no different....

Disk 2 did end up showcasing him on the classics. But that was not the initial reason for the re-records. The deal was in place b/f Arnel was ever hired. That was the deal Wal-Mart wanted. Wal-Mart wanted hits re-recorded and Neal and Jon were going to add three songs to it. Once they hired Arnel, they said they were inspired and wanted to do a full set of songs. That's how it came to be two disks.

It matters to me because it really freshens up the songs....the Separate Ways one in particular. Wheel in the Sky at the end really is something too.

LOL. Whatever.

The retreads served it's purpose. It turned a sub-platinum album into a platinum one. If only the band could get away with this cheap trick each time they release an album.....

...they could recapture another 2% of the greatness they had when perry was in the group....

If you change the arrangement too much, you risk not being able to fool a casual listener into thinking they are the originals.

You can't stop it. It's going to happen. Deal with it. Ok, lemme explain. Everytime there is a latest DVD of a concert there are going to be classics in it, so there will always be re-records.

The re-records were free and I like most of them. 2 I think are better than the originals...Open Arms and Only The Young. And Separate Ways certainly has a bigger, tougher vocal.
