Agreed.
Unless it's used as a brushunder (3rd/4th guitar) on the studio trax it's happened on several times.
Liberty, the first 1/2 of Patiently and the intro to WITSK it should be upfront where it was on the records but that's IT as far as featuring acoustics live (unplugged shit is so boring even if it's Clapton or Keith Richards doing it).
"I love almost everybody."---Rocky Balboa 1990
"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001
"I looked at Neal, and I just saw a guy who really wants his band back"-JCain 2/01

I wouldn't mind if they did a short acoustic set mid-show something like:

Mother, Father
Winds of March
Liberty
Open Arms/Faithfully/Why Can't This Night Go On Forever medley
Patiently (Neal with electric strapped on while playing the acoustic mounted on a stand, breaks into the distorted riff mid-song and Deen comes thundering in on drums, thus ending acoustic set)

And unplugged shit can be decent sometimes - but melodic rock from the 80s doesn't fare well. It takes killer arrangements, killer harmonies, and killer songwriting to keep me entertained throughout a prolonged acoustic set - otherwise they have to interject a few electric guitar leads and some organs/synths/electric piano to keep me entertained... oh, and drums are always a must.

I love the acoustic breakdown BSG does on this song, but then again they are a harmonic group to begin with.

Yeah, when you can sing like this, you can get away with this stuff. And there's a full band and instruments like pedal steel adding plenty of depth besides two acoustics being strummed up and down... Plus, it's just a completely different style of music... still melodic rock, but not the same way.

The song really has to lend itself to the change. Hard to find a total set of Pre-Escape songs that fit the bill.

Say you will

I should say that even though I'm not a huge on a Journey acoustic set, Neal's acoustic prowess is very underrated... he had some memorable stuff in Bad English and on Beyond The Thunder, for starters. BE - Time Stood Still and Neal Schon - Zanzibar have some great work, for example.

I'm not into the whole unplugged thing. I think one or two songs in unison would be okay but that's it.

No doubts that Neal can play acoustically.

Awesome, never saw that before. It's nice to see... because a great electric player will not always be a great acoustic player and vice versa.

I never liked the unplugged bullshit from anyone even Clapton.Play the shit like the record and add some cool leads and shit ,If i want acousict shit Neal Young pulls that off real good, anyone else sounds thin unless it is an intro to some kickass song, whats even worse the drummer has to beat his meat, or play some stupid bongo, or tanborine, poor guy
