I have been on more accident scenes (just like the video) than i care to remember. Any kind of distraction can cause the same results. Texting while driving is about as foolish as it gets.

Excellent video GB. Anyone on this forum with teenage drivers should make them watch this. I don't know why our govenment doesn't do something similar.

It's illegal in CA but we all do it anyway. It's pretty bad. Even my dad is always on his Blackberry while driving, my sister and I get mad at him for it.

Heart-stopping footage and a brilliant project and message. Drivers need to stop using the damn cell behind the wheel. There are so many irresponsible people on the roads.
I went to the Gwent Police's website hoping to see more of it (looks like it's a half an hour movie), but they have the same short clip. They posted interesting info about the making of the movie, though.

They just made it illegal in Cleveland a few weeks ago while admitting that it would be next to impossible to enforce consistently... eg how do they differentiate if a cop just happens to see you paging through your contacts for a second to dial a number in your phone book vs. sending a text? I suspect most citations will occur after an accident where there's evidence and/or admission that driver at fault was texting.

Texting while driving is very hazardous. I've seen people do all kinds of crazy stuff while their driving.... putting on mascara, watching a DVD, looking at and messing with their GPS, looking thru their CD collection, having sex, fighting, , drinking alcohol, smoking doobage ( used to see joints more now its blunts) and many times reading....newspapers, maps....I've even seen people have a book propped up on the steering wheel. You name it and people do it while swerving. I've also heard people say : " I drive better when I'm drunk"

while I see the importance of the underlying message, I found the video to be so insanely over the top that it actually waters down the message a bit.


What you see is a dreadfully disturbing, gory and unsettling accident. You pretty much forget that the initial accident, according to the crafters of the video, is caused by texting.

Also, I find it a tad implausible, as the driver of the opposing car simply barreled along....not swerving out of the way...I'd drive off the road before I allowed someone to hit me head on.



But regardless, the point is that the video is rather extreme for the crime. While I do acknowledge that texting while driving is dangerous, this was so extreme that it reduced the impact, not increased it....because the outcome was rather far-fetched. it was almost comical...

It's stupid to call someone just to say "I'm on my way now" or "I'm outside, open the door/come down" or even "what time was the thing tonight?" There's no need for tone in those messages. One of my friends, who I'm always picking up or visiting, refuses to pay text charges so I have to call her for everything.

You are right, brief messages are fine and sometimes texting is better for those reasons but as far as having conversations I would rather talk then type it all out. It's easier to talk then to type back and forth for very long.
Also because I'm not that good at typing.

It's more stupid to text while driving. Once upon a time, people weren't so anal about letting everybody know where they were at any given moment, and wanting to know where somebody else was at any given moment.

And I talk with those free p.o.s. earbuds the T-Mobile agent gave me. I prefer to keep my hands on the wheel.

They should make it illegal for a cell to be used while the vehicle is rolling, period. What did we do before cell phones? We fucking waited til we got to home or a destination to make a call. Fortunately I'm not one of these who's life line is having a cell phone in my ear at all waking moments.

There are already laws against "inattentive" or "careless" driving. Enforce the dang laws that are on the books. That's all we need, more laws telling us what we can't do.

If you can't drive safe don't drive. Some people can't chew gum and drive. Hell, some can't drive...period. If you can talk and drive...safely...let em.

Let's see, what else should be banned...women applying make up, changing the heat or AC, changing the radio station, putting in a cd, turning up the volume, eating/drinking (imagine the uproar by the fast food industry), listening to yelling kids in the backseat, arguing with a nagging spouse? The next thing they'll want ot do is ban getting hea...oops never mind. Was there an outcry over safety when everyone talked on CBs? Crap, those big ass mothertruckers were on the things all the time!!

Enforce the laws we have but most importantly, people need to apply the law of common sense. Just like reaching into the backseat for your briefcase or six pack or whatever can't be too safe, neither is looking down typing on a phone.
