Yeah, that's what I thought. That would explain why the sound was so good. I also think that the band was pretty lifeless in the Vegas dvd. No camaraderie among the band members, etc. I haven't seen the Manila deal yet, but I have seen youtube clips of parts of the show, and performance-wise, the band seemed on fire.

There was hardly anything that could be saved in the lead vocal and the problem was to me at that particular time was Neal Schon was grimacing when he would miss these notes."

Also, if I remember correct, it was the Vegas 2001 vocal tracks
that were suspected as being used during "Tapegate"

Correct. The band re-recorded a bunch of songs when Augeri first joined the band, but they never commercially released them. The Tapegate saga was a mixture of Vegas 2001 vocal tracks and those re-recordings, such as Edge Of The Blade, which they performed in Europe in 2006 when Tapegate was still going on.

I'm not sure if the entire Vegas DVD had re-recorded vocals, but they did have Augeri go back in the studio to re-record his parts for a majority of it. Dean was at the show they filmed in December of 2000 and I think he has said that Augeri was decent that night, but did not sound like what came out on DVD.

What's wrong with the video??? It's shot on a dock and shows all of the members and has a bit of a storyline. It's a bare bones video with no ridiculous special effects to take away from the song and make the video supercede the song. It was the 80's, and for it's time, it's a pretty cool video. I don't need stupid shit like The Cars did or the outrageously stupid, though successful, Thriller video. Journey let the song carry the video, and not the opposite. I can respect that.

If you want a music video where the video doesn't impact the song, listen to the CD. Separate Ways has a storyline? Cain doing keyboards on a wall? Invisible instruments? Chasing a ghost chick with a sourpuss face and Flock of Seagulls haircut? That's a good video?

Shit John, I agree with you. Steve wasn't a perfect fit but he was good and is a GREAT guy. Over the long haul, the catalog took it's toll on his voice. The whole situation makes me appreciate Perry that much more. The dude sang his ass off for 8 years and NEVER detuned a fucking show. He was clearly the best ...

And Augeri was a lot better than he gets cdredit for ...

I guess that depends on who you talk to. There was a certain faction of people who though Augeri was the greatest vocalist to ever grace a stage. I actually like Augeri's voice but not for Journey material. He simply didn't have the pipes to sing their catalog and struggled mightily. It's certainly not his fault. I think Augeri fans simply were and are a bit too sensitive if anyone dared to criticize their dreamy, red leather wearing, perm boy. At the end of the day, I'd be thrilled to be able to sing as well as Augeri. I just always believed that his voice was far too thin and had zero power for a catalog that required a whole lot of power!

They may not have done it on the new DVD, everyone knows they cleaned up the 2001 show. But, they certainly aren't the only band to have ever take a live DVD or CD that's been recorded back into the studio and clean it up. Most do, and while not the Journey-type of music, I remember a bunch of years back when Chicago put 25 or 26, whichever was the recent live CD and it was so obvious they mixed that back in a studio and cleaned it up so much, there wasn't much of anything "live" about it.

I always liked the 2001 DVD regardless. Would still like to see other Augeri era stuff like the 30th Anniv. show...

That 2001 DVD is incredibly good.

It really is. I can't believe that a few years ago, I didn't even have interest in seeing it. But I'm glad I bought it!! Now that y'all have mentioned it, I may need to spin that baby again soon. Maybe even run all the live dvds for a rainy day Journey-thon (since I still haven't seen the 2008 Vegas one )... 2 Steves, an Arnel and a Pizza Place.

That would make a fun night. I could see having some friends or family over, eat, drink and Journey out.

It would take more than a night to cover it all though.
