Gregg sounded great and it's amazing this even happened.

Listening to this again tonight, I noticed that Deen hit the same high harmonics at 3:20 on Neal's solo, that Perry did here starting at 3:05. I was stunned.
If this has been discussed already then my bad.

Nice work by Deen, though they were half a step lower than SP did them in... which is a BIG difference when you're up in the balls-frying atmosphere like that
Deen sounds great throughout the verses on the call and response. Gregg still has his voice but he was pitchy... surprising considering he actively tours. Leads me to believe that 1/2 step down threw him. It wasn't like he was straining

I didn't realize it was a 1/2 step down.Shit. Anyway, Rolie did great considering he hasn't performed this song on stage in 29 some odd years. And Deen? Just fucking incredible. They need to volume up his mic more here, and always. He's hard to hear sometimes.

My guess is that they don't want to tinker with Deen's volume as he switches from background to lead. But they should.

Yeah, that might get tricky. Good point. I'm hammered.

You fucker, I'm about to leave to go to this open blues jam and drink a few pints of Guinness but I can't get drunk tonight.
They should be able to adjust Deen's volume pretty easily - any sound guy worth his salt is adjusting vocal levels all night long, esp. w/ a backing vox heavy band like Journey.
I agree .A headset mix never sounds as good as a regular mic, although it would be harder to play the drums that way. he nails it everytimeSaint John wrote:Starrider wrote:And Deen? Just fucking incredible. They need to volume up his mic more here, and always. He's hard to hear sometimes.

Yep, Rolie did this and Anytime when The Storm toured in 1992ish as a duet with Chalfant doing the Perry parts. He still does it every now and then when Chalfant shows up. Those 2 seem to get along fairly well, and they did duets on The Storm cds also.
My guess is Rolie would do the hits in his solo shows on a regular basis if he had a tenor in the band to cover Perry. I think it's down to the fact that it's just not worth paying a tenor to come along to do 1-2 songs in a set that is primarily Santana/Solo material which Rolie can handle quite well on his own. When Chalfant's nearby though, watch out.
