The Doobies were yesterday, today is Journey's show. Also performing today are Pablo Cruise, Taj Mahal and three other acts.

Just wondering if anyone was at this show. Being that it was the last for this and next year, I was curious if it was a special evening or just the same show.

Journey rocks sold-out benefit
New lead singer
By David Bolling

Marking what winery officials say may have been its most successful charity event yet, the B.R. Cohn Concert blew out the stops last weekend with two days of music capped by the mega-power rock and roll of legendary band, Journey.

On a two-day bill that included the Doobie Brothers, Pablo Cruise, Little Feat, Taj Mahal, Jackie Greene and more, the appearance of Journey took the traditionally-sold out concert to new heights. With new Pilipino lead singer Arnel Pineda leaping about the stage and casting his soaring voice over the rapt, standing audience, Journey belied its age, which is now pushing 36 years. Pineda was hired a year ago after performing with a Journey cover band in Manila.

Founding member and guitar legend Neal Schon saw his act on YouTube and three months later Pineda was performing with the group instead of like the group. The rest of the band - keyboardist Jonathan Cain, bassist Ross Valory and drummer Deen Castronovo - appeared essentially ageless and the crowd showered them all with love. Proceeds from the Friday auction/dinner, the two-day concert, and Monday's charity golf tournament had not been totaled at press time but a Cohn spokesman said it would be close to, if it didn't exceed, the record amount raised in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Organizations benefiting from the Cohn charity events this year include the Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley, the Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance, the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Level II Trauma Center and Bread & Roses.

My dad is a BIG Doobies fan. We were considering flying out for this one, but I had already planned on seeing Jimi Jamison and Fergie Frederiksen in Minneapolis that weekend. The concert was canceled but I still had a fun time in the cities.

I will keep a watch on this event next year - should be interesting to see who they get.
