I may not care for the material but the production of TBF is over the moon, just an outstanding job.

Yeah...while I only pull this out for a walk in the rain, and don't care to hear anyone of it played in concert, the production was probably the best I've ever heard. Mix TBF on an MP3 player with all their other albums and the production is superior to anything they've ever done, including recently, by a mile.

The musical production is amazing. The opening of "When You Love A Woman" sounds simply gorgeous. I don't think the production on Perry's voice really shines though. I think Jimbo Barton did a better job on FTLOSM, despite the heavy breathing which was not really a production issue, per se. I read somewhere where Kevin Shirley said he used a ZOOM reverb unit on Perry's voice, which at the time I thought would have been insane, because those things are about $299, versus a Lexicon PCM which is what is pretty much the gold standard in 'verbs. However, on listening to the remastered TBF on my pro earbuds regularly, I think he may have been serious. The reverb and EQ just doesn't sound that lush and full on TBF. I also know that Perry tracked his vocals with Cain at Cain's garage studio before porting the vocal tracks to Record Plant for Shirley to mix, and there's a huge difference between Cain's console and his Shure mic versus what they may have used at Record Plant.

I'm at work and just listened to the song Trial By Fire closely (as usual--about 15 times)... The marriage of Neal's guitar and SP's voice is at its finest on this song to me.. Just gorgeous--and a little melancholy. I can't imagine any other 2 singers/guitarists doing this song together as good as this beautiful melody. I miss this.

I agree. It's absolutely one of my favorite songs off of TBF , even above WYLAW, and one of their best songs, to me. Steve Perry at his best and what makes him so unique and apart from other singers, and love, love Neal's playing on this, so haunting. And Perry's influence seems to be all over these lyrics, not Cain, to me, but it was written by Cain and Perry.

TBF is great, I love it ...everyone I know prefers TBF to Arrival, but we love Arrival!!

+1. As a Journey album, it's WAY below the mark. Arrival and Revelation are better albums.

Well...

To me, there are songs on it that just are extremely dull. "Just the Rain", and "Trial By Fire" for 2. They go nowhere and I know some people (usually the women) love them. "Message of Love" was more a rehash of "Separate Ways" than "Never Walk Away" was of "Be Good To Yourself". "Can't Tame the Lion", "When You Love a Women", "I Can See it in Your Eyes", and Easy to Fall are amazingly good tracks. "Castles Burning" goes on for about a half hour too long and Perry's newscaster thing just sounds silly. The rest of it sounds like For the Love of Strange Medicine to me. Not that interesting.

Has nothing to do with Perry by the way (though his voice was pretty wrecked on the album), but THE SONGS just weren't there to me. I believe that I played Arrival more than TBF. I don't HATE it, I just think that after that time off, it could've been a much better album. I also didn't appreciate some of the distortion on Perry's voice that was added. Sounds like the mic was a bit overdriven on a few songs and while that might be neat for "Fall Out Boy" on Steve Perry's voice, it wasn't appreciated at least by me.

You're right on Just the Rain and Trial By Fire re usually the women love those songs. I love those two songs. And I doubt you will find one female Journey fan that doesn't.

It's never coming out in my opinion. I think it's been too long, and he's just too much of a perfectionist to let anyone hear any of those songs he's worked on over the years. I hope I'm wrong, but I think if he felt confident about them, we'd be hearing them right now. The sad truth is that most of us would love his album no matter WHAT it sounded like. I'm no longer holding my breath...

And yet, the radio station that I listen to at work, which plays a LOT of 'classic' Journey, refers to them as "Steve Perry and Journey". This is the only station in my area that I ever (albeit very briefly) heard play AATY. Folks still know who the real Journey is.
