Coldplay "Glee"-fully Allows Fox To Use Their Material

Coldplay
Capitol RecordsGlee, Fox-TV's high-ratings behemoth, can now add another band to the roster of artists who have consented to have their songs covered by the show's singing cast members. Earlier this month, at a pre-Emmy awards roundtable sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, Glee's creator/producer Ryan Murphy intimated that among the artists approached for consideration, two elusive performers had so far not responded to their requests: Bryan Adams (whose hits include "Summer of '69" and "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?") and British chart-toppers Coldplay. According to Murphy, "At the beginning a lot of people didn't know what we were and asked to see pages [in advance], but I refused because I didn't want to set precedent of them having any involvement." This proviso probably caused some trepidation among artists concerned (justifiably) about just how their songs would be utilized for a tv show. But recently, Coldplay contacted Glee's producer and told him: "We're sorry, you can have our catalog."

Coldplay now joins such performers as Madonna, Billy Joel, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and Journey in Glee's musical coterie. Journey frontman Steve Perry recently confessed to the L.A. Times he had some reservations about how New Directions, (the fictional choir depicted on the show) would interpret Journey's Top-Ten hit "Don't Stop Believing" until he actually heard it. Now Perry not only expresses his approval, but is grateful that the cover version has sparked renewed interest in the band's 1981 single: "They worked hard to make our tune their own. And it's actually brought people's attention to go check out the original. It's something I never thought I'd see in my lifetime."

Music from the tv series, released in partnership with Columbia Records, has proven very profitable as well - Glee's The Power of Madonna CD debuted on Billboard's Top Ten albums chart when it was released, and the Journey cover has been certified gold. Which begs the question: which Coldplay songs should New Directions perform? Here are a few of my selections they might want to consider:

"The Scientist"

"Speed of Sound"

"Don't Panic"

"Yellow"

"Clocks"

"Viva La Vida"

"Green Eyes"

Tell me which of the above you'd like to hear on an upcoming Glee episode, or share with me your own choices.

Look at Bryan, holding out until the end. We'll see how long he can resist the temptation for easy money.

actually I could picture this...

Something comes in BA mail, from FOX TV... he looks at it...discards the letter... hence no response... the show becomes a hit...and all the artists that okayd the useage of their songs are rolling in dough... then this article comes out this week about BA not responding to their request... ;-) kinda funny!! Perry had enough courage to say yes... immediately!!

Don't know who's lying, but he was pretty mad that his name came up in all of it because he said he never had any contact with them.

remember lots of celebs hate anything FOX... so if something came from FOX TV BA might have discarded the letter, just in not wanting to deal with it...

Actually the requests usually go through the Song publishers license department and then they notifier the appropriate copyright holders, writers, ect.

For Journey, it would go through Sony licensing to Columbia, who I think would notify the managers of Perry, Schon or who ever has copyright.
It could be the info was never passed on or someone else (the publisher) rejected it without even going through Adams. Only one person with copyright has to say No to kill the deal. It has to be unanimous from all concerned parties for permission to be given.

Paul McCartney (inset) sent 'Glee' creator Ryan Murphy a series of Beatles songs he wants featured on the Fox show.

BEVERLY HILLS – Fox's hit musical drama "Glee" is mapped out through four seasons, creator Ryan Murphy told TV critics here Monday afternoon.

That's good news to millions of fans and a British singer-songwriter named McCartney who recently sent creator Ryan Murphy a mashup tape of songs he'd like considered for the show.

"I thought I was being punked," said Murphy. "But it was real. It was this package from Paul McCartney, hand-written, with two CDs and a note in it. It said, ‘Hope you'll consider these songs.'

"So I listened and it was things like 'Michele.' I was gobsmacked. I mean, I grew up with this guy."

So expect to hear some McCartney songs on "Glee" during the second season that launches in September.

Why assume anyone's lying? It could very well have been a mix up between GLEE's people and his?

Oh yeah. I didn't really like the show at the pilot but there have been some laugh out loud moments for me ... and most of them because of Lynch. That one line of "So you like show-tunes? That doesn't mean that you're gay ... it just means that you're an awful person" was priceless.

None, unless it is an episode about insomnia, then Coldplay should fit the bill perfectly.

It's actually a great outlet for music appreciation - showing the new generation that oldies are almost always better than the new shit and opening their world to a lot of great tunes.

DSB was done very well and I saw the main girl do Total Eclipse Of The Heart - really quite astounding. You just don't get ballads like that these days....perhaps now we will.

I've only seen 5 or so episodes...not essential viewing, but like I said....I like what they are doing and that's making kids think about music as an art form again.

I agree with that. It introduces great music from the past to kids who might never even give it a chance. I took my students on a field trip to Six Flags last year. I had my DSB T shirt on. I kid you not, my students started singing it in unison, and they knew all the words! They said I love that song! And all joined in. Made my day! :D
