Major Radio Promotion Already

Postby JRNYMAN » Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:12 am

Since last Friday when tickets went on sale here in Phoenix for the July show, I've heard the promo on 4 different stations each of which caters to a different demographic. The "oldies" station, the Classic Rock station, MIX 96.9 which is a mixed genre - 70's, 80's and today's hits, and Phoenix's main rock station. They didn't waste any time starting the radio saturation either. I heard the first one 20 mins. after tix went on sale.

If they're hitting the radio this hard this early in the tour everywhere in the US, that's got to be some serious advertising coin being thrown at this tour! I wonder if Journey's camp is footing most of the bill for the marketing because the fact that Foreigner and NR are also on the bill is almost an afterthought. That fact is barely mentioned at the very end of the promo.

Can't believe they're still using the Perry versions of the song sound bites in the ad. Isn't that false advertising or something? :P

I have seen one print ad here (Sacramento, CA area) for the tour so far. No radio or tv as of yet.

The ads I have heard in LA. play snippets from all three band's hits (DSB, Don't Tell Me You Love Me, Hot Blooded, etc.). It's being advertised as more of classic rock get together. Really, the same type of promotion that is going on in the UK also. It's basically being marketed (on the radio at least) as a greatest hits tour trying to get the fans to buy into seeing three classic rock groups and hearing a ton of hits from the 80s, all in one show.
The headliner usually is the one who handles the promotional fees, as the other two bands are just guests, helping to make sure the venue gets filled.
I know Foreigner will be taking advantage of their slot, releasing a "new 3-disc package prior to the tour that will include new digital studio recordings of the greatest hits, featuring the current line-up of the band, some new songs, a live CD and a live concert DVD that will also be broadcast on PBS this summer."

Perhaps they have different ads for different areas? I heard a bunch of ads for the Irvine show a few weeks ago but now it's quieted down a bit. Maybe it will pick up again when it gets closer to the summer.

I wonder if Foreigner fans (Actually, their my third favorite band) will berate Foreigner for remaking their past hits? Or is it only Perry-loons that do that sort of thing?

As it's not Kelly's debut album with the band, I think they'll be okay with it.

LOL! I'm good, thanks for asking. "Green Pea"... I Love It! If only, right? As much as I've wanted to post and comment since the Journey forum went tits up, I've been stuck in terminal lurk mode due to not remembering what my password was combined with no longer having access to the email account I used when I registered here 3 years ago. I attempted to contact Andrew a couple of times a a while back but all-in-all, the truth is I was just plain lazy about trying to resolve it - until yesterday. Long story short... TA-DA!   There were a few discussions I really would have liked to participate in but couldn't and that was sorta frustrating, but eventually they blew up into a heated debate, (pretty unusual for this board) so it was just as well I couldn't comment.

Cheers!
