Will Eclipse sell more than Revelation on its debut.

Postby Don » Fri May 20, 2011 8:17 am

Revelation sold 105k when it debuted at #5 in 2008. Billboard doesn't do a double count like the RIAA does for certification so that was a legitimate 105,000 transactions. Can Eclipse beat that? Judging by this picture from a Wal-Mart in Texas, it looks like the retailer is banking on it.

Not in this country....it'll be lucky to pull in 75,000 LEGITIMATE sales. Which doesn't mean fans buying out WalMart's selection(RIP)...

Journey should have eaten the cost of producing this CD....choosing to market their concerts this summer. Giving away a free copy of the CD, or flashdrive w/ included songs with a sale at the Merch booth at the shows....just another missed opportunity for the J-Boyz.

Tom Petty sold 125k on Mojo's debut last year (and the album still only made it to #2 on the chart). For a lot of the older acts, there seems to be a hidden segment out there who really want to have a tangible product in hand.

Maybe, but I don't know. It seems like there has been limited promotion for this save the internet and I guess some radio spots. The last time they had the CBSmorning show segment and they had Ellen before it was released, I think, and the GQ article, etc. I kept thinking I would see them on one of the late night shows instead of some of the lame acts they have on those shows sometimes.

I think After All These Years and Never Walk Away were getting radio play before Revelation's release. I've heard that a few stations have played COH but not to the extent that AATY was, and even that song never got tons of radio airtime on anything beyond Adult Contemporary stations.

Still, Tom Petty didn't get any major pub that I remember and still sold a decent amount his first week.

I dont think its gonna sell as much as revelation did in the first week. I see eclipse maybe selling 60-75,000 copies the first week and then unfortunetly I think sales will drop pretty good after that.

Total sales for Eclipse I predict will be: 300,000 or so when its all said and done

Worldwide, it will crush Revelation, but unless I can get every person around the world that bought it to produce a photo, receipt and a DNA swab, no one here will believe it.

I saw today the The Cars latest album "Move Like This" debuted at #7 on May 10th selling 36,000 that week. Not bad.

80s bands are really making a comeback on the charts.

World wide sales won't be too hard to check now that we have had practice. Looking for a Top 50 debut in the UK and some higher debut numbers in those little 10 million people countries, like Sweden. Let's hope it catches on better than the single did (COH). Just an unspectacular performance on the European charts for that song.

Just don't equate chart position with sales numbers as 10,000 sold is more than enough to go number one in the majority of places outside the U.S. and U.K.

Many bands have done this, including Journey, and it does not work. It does not help tickets sales and it degrades the product. Many fans on the Generations tour did not pick up their free CD with less than 30% redeemed at each show. Additionally, some fans threw them away not knowing they were CDs. They just thought they were an advertisement. There is also a cost to the band to employ the people that are handing out the CDs zt each venue. If it worked more artists would be doing it.

I asked an associate in my Wal-mart today if they had Eclipse in stock and the dumb idiot tried to tell me that there was nothing about a new journey album in their system so that means that it isn't going to be released for at least another month or two.

Yep, that's why Def Leppard was practically begging for one. Big payday with minimum effort.

If Journey made a few dollars per unit sold on a 3 disc package, they're gonna KILL on this one disc package that's almost priced the same. Especially when it goes Gold.

And if the "J-Boyz" did exactly that, give away free CDs at shows, S2M would take the other tact and would be saying "another missed opportunity" not selling through Wal-Mart. :D

Someone has to play the contrarian. It's a thankless task. :D

What it does, is mirror the old school big label deal - but fairer. "Here's cash up front, we'll give a generous royalty..." but also throw a bunch of PR support behind it.

I wish that were the case, but I seriously, seriously doubt it given the Greatest Hits and DVD thrown in for Revelation.

But I would be very happy to be proven wrong.

Brad Paisley and a New Kids On The Block/Back Street Boys convergence album.

Journey should have no problem securing a spot at #2 unless Paisley is a lot more popular than I'm aware of.
