Do yourself a favor guys and gals. AVOID MP3's !!! If you use apple try to get apple lossless files. They are bigger but the reason for that is because all of the audio information is there. Mp3's are small because they are taking things out.
Mp3's are lowering the standard for music fidelity, they have lowered the standard for audio listening and production as well. I have amazed my friends by showing them the difference between mp3's and the retail discs. The thing is that you have to have VERY GOOD speakers and amp.however you can do it on the cheap too. Some nice earbuds like Shure makes for use as in ear monitors (at a decent price too) will reveal the difference as they are a giant leap over standard buds. Most if not all apple devices will play apple lossless formats if I am not mistaken however not everything is available in that format. Get it if you can. Do you really need 300 albums on your ipod ? I would rather have 50 that sound amazing..
Mp3s hide so much nuance and detail. I have listened to this album in both formats and as usual, newer music being that it is mastered so much louder than 10 years ago makes the mp3 issue even worse. Sloshy treble, crushed midrange and bass loses top end definition. Thing is, until you have heard the difference you probably dont know what you are missing. Hotel California has a piano in it. I didnt know that until I spent some modest money on my receiver and speakers. Its WAY back but to my shock it is there. Hard to hear on the regular cd and easier on the remasters as well as the high def 5.1 mix. Point being that you might be surprised by what you never knew was there. Trust me when I say this though. Hearing Perry through this setup I have now... Fuck..... Thats all I can say.....
From an audio standpoint this CD sounds amazing. It is not mastered as hot as most new releases. It is clear without being harsh, heavy without being over bearing but just a bit hot in the midrange no doubt to facilitate the guitars being so upfront as that is where they sit in the eq spectrum. Sounds MUCH better than the last cd and is very honest. I hear impefections in places. A couple of vocal croaks that are very minor. I appreciate their honesty.
Just say no to compressed music !
