I had the rare opportunity to listen to damn near the entire catalog back-to-back and virtually without interruption a week or so ago. My wife's sister got transferred to Springfield, IL and I was asked/volunteered to drive her moving truck full of her shit from here in PHX to her new place. Knowing I was going to have a lot of personal audio time just for me, I decided to load up the MP3 player with the entire catalog (with the exception of repeats, Time3, etc.). I had already resigned myself to the fact that I would be listening to it via earbuds and that was okay. However, when I picked up the truck from the rental place I was ecstatic to find that I had gotten a brand new truck which surprisingly had a fairly kickass stereo installed AND had an input jack for iPods, etc. I was stoked!
The trip took just over 25 hours which gave me the chance to listen to complete albums at high volume, sometimes listening to a song twice or backing up to hear a certain part multiple times to appreciate various nuances, harmonies, instrumentals, etc. I have to admit, some of the deeper cuts I hadn't heard in quite some time. It was a nice treat. Perhaps the single biggest discovery/revelation - if I wasn't already aware of it - was the drastic, discernible change in SP's voice between Escape and Frontiers. Another nice thing was reminiscing and remembering just how much I liked particular songs at various times over the decades.
Forgive me for a moment while I act like a freakin' girl.....
One of the coolest moments during my little audio vacation was on the morning of the second day. It was just about sun-up and I had just reached St. Louis and could barely make out the arch when Good Morning Girl played. That was very freakin' cool for some reason.
I also re-discovered how incredibly good TBF is. There are some songs on that album that I feel are masterpieces - and I don't use that word lightly.
Just wanted to share my little slice of Journey heaven. Probably won't get that kind of "me" time again for a long time.
