For all you that want to immediately label anyone having issues with diction in the Journey music as racists, bigots or whatever... first it is an unfair and ignorant comment.

Second, this could be compared to the opera. You could have a tenor with the best voice in the world, but if the opera was in Italian or French and the tenor could not pronounce the words of the opera correctly, he would be run off the stage. Opera singers train for this, just as they train their vocals. This is no different.

Again, nothing personal at all. The singer could be from anywhere. I don't care. What the ears like or don't like is the issue. I think we're all pretty selfish in that perspective, as it really doesn't matter what the band members do in their personal lives (good or bad), it's what comes through the speakers that counts.

Good Post, Pete ...I agree!!
Seriously, though ...the people who refer to others
as racists or bigots are bigots, which, FYI, is a person who
is utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion ...
the irony always makes me giggle!!

Thanks, that explains alot, I was wondering about that actually. I was watching this Manila clip of MB at the Areneta colisium last month and wondered how thousands of peeps could be singing their english lyrics back to them like that.........considering this is one of their deeper cuts, it's not like they heard those lyrics tons of times on the radio or anything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1wx3IeiLNg

It always amazes me how well some music does in countries where the lyrics being sung aren't even their first language, like Japan, etc. 8)

You just take any opportunity to share a MB song or video, dontcha?
The only music that does well in other countries no sang in their first language is English. As far as Japanese fans, they sing along with anything , but the majority dont even understand what theyre singing ;)

LOL, funny how my computer just automatically attaches a link after the last period of my posts like that, eh? One fan at a time baby one fan at a time.

So if the Japanese don't even understand the lyrics, then the vocals/musicality has to be pretty damn good to get their attention and keep them such loyal long time fans, eh? Rawwwwr, I'm on fire today. :P

They sing along just like a parrot would, without understanding the lyrics and yes for most parts it is due to a pretty damn good music/vocals combo. Once in a while tho, bands like MB get lucky and their songs get some kind of attention , more than Martin ever expected ;) Fire eh ? ;)

What does his speaking voice have to do with how he sings? Celine Dion has a very pronounced French accent, yet you hear no evidence of this in her singing voice. I'm sorry, but the man is making a lot of money singing professionally in a legendary rock band that has been around for 30 years. I'm not cutting him any slack. He's a public figure and Arnel should and will be judged upon how well he does his job professionally. What I hear, while it's good, but being a professional singer takes more than forming the words and hitting the notes. The vocals, while I don't hear as much diction issues, still sound unpolished to me. Of course, we could also blame the rushed way that the vocals were recorded, and maybe the producer not standing up and saying, "Hey, don't repeat this line or keep this line simple...." All I know is, at the end of the day, the end product is going to be a reflection of that singer's ability to make everything flow naturally. I don't really hear it on several songs and in several places. On other songs, I think he does a great job. Arnel is not completely bad throughout this album. I think what some "ignatz's" don't seem to understand is that this isn't an all or nothing thing. You don't have to either love Arnel or hate him. Nothing wrong with giving him credit in areas where I think he deserves it and being critical in areas where he deserves it. Again, he's a professional singer singing in an established band. The "leave poor Arnel alone" crowd needs to wake up and realize that.

Sheena Easton was the worse. When she sang, she sounded fine but when she spoke, you were like "WTF?" Of course, like Celine Dione, she worked hard to cover her accent when singing and did a wonderful job. I guess it's all about how much effort you put into it.
