The members of Journey would like to express their deep sorrow for the loss suffered by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their music will live on forever, and words cannot express our sadness for the loss of Cassie Gaines, Steve Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick and Ronnie Van Zant. Fly on Freebird.

What does Wiki say, Don? I remember Steve had said he wrote it as a personal introspective. He had been knocking on the doors for so long, that the 1st time he got together with Neal, out came the lyrics. It's about him being up on stage, fullfilling his dream.
