Should Journey have toured Escape's 30th anniversary?

Postby AR » Thu Jul 07, 2011 5:27 am

Found this link on Blabbermouth where they ask Neal Schon if they were considering playing Escape in it's entirety for the 30th anniversary of its release.

This might not have been a bad idea. KISS toured and played "Alive" on it's 35th anniversary just before it released Sonic Boom through Walmart. During the Alive 35 tour they mentioned the upcoming release every night and played one song from it. This allowed them to have their own hype machine with a captive nostalgia audience who all knew there would be a new CD coming out.

Sonic Boom sold 238,000 units and charted at #2. Both the Alive 35 and Sonic Boom tours were successful and weren't package tours.

Seems to me that Journey could have used the same formula and did a tour playing all of Escape in running order as a lead in to releasing Eclipse.

They definately should capitalized on the "Escape" anniversary. They could have marketed that tour more easilly than their current one.

After further evaluation, some kind of tie in with Escape seems like it would have been a good idea.

On the eve of the US tour, seeing Escape re-enter the chart while Eclipse departs I have a had a change of heart. I didn't think Columbia would do anything for Escape but something's happening for it to get back on the charts again.
Eclipse needs all the help it can get. With a shorter chart run than even Arrival and only 50k sold, the album has become a MAJOR flop before Journey has even touched down in the states to begin the tour.

Welcome back, AR!
Don does have a valid point, and besides the Escape album is fairly represented at every Journey show I've been to since '98.

Gene Simmons is a master of promo & hype. Everything this guy does is all about selling KISS.
It'd be nice if Journey had someone like that.

They did! His name was Herbie Herbert, and Perry had the band fire him.

They did, and his name was Walter "Herbie" Herbert. But the band's dictator insisted they fire him. Part of the "divide and conquer" stage of what he believed to be the band's last days.

I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

True, but same when Kiss played "Alive" or when "Cheap Trick did "Buddokan" completely. Those albums already have strong representation in those bands' live sets as well.

My thinking is that fans perceive full album shows as different even if by doing it the setlist isn't changed that much. Just a way to hook fans in that might have said to themselves "Well I just saw them, but this is a special event.

Also it is kind of cool to here an album presented in the same running order you once listened it. I think that goes over well with long time fans.

No right or wrong here, I was just throwing out the "Escape 30 Tour" as a way for them to start early promotion of Eclipse.
