Rolie to Cain Transition Question

Postby JRNYMAN » Tue Sep 27, 2011 7:11 am

Given how hectic and exhausting the touring had become during the period of time when Rolie decided to leave the band, I've always been unclear on the timeline associated with Rolie deciding to leave, Cain getting the job and actually taking Rolie's place on stage, the recording of the Escape album and the start AND end of the Escape tour. Whew! It seems like everything I've read places all of these things in 1981 and obviously that can't be true. Add to that the fact that Perry cites the reason for the first time he walked away from the band as being the non-stop touring which at the time of the quote they had been on tour for 18 months or so and that happened in when? Oh yeah.... 1981!

You're right; the time period from 1980-1983 must have been exhausting for them! I'm not sure on the exact timeline, but Gregg's last performance was in October 1980 and Cain's first peformance must have been the BAMMIES in March 81. The Escape tour went from July 81-July 82, and Frontiers tour went from Feb 83-Sept 83. So between touring and making the albums they really didn't have much of a break at all.

Jonathan told us that Rolie was already trying to get off the road in 1980 and since the Babys were opening for them that year, he was on their radar. He told Herbie to consider Jonathan to be his replacement.

Yeah, yeah.... I know the story of how Cain was introduced to Herbie in the back of a limo and how Gregg basically said to Herbie and Neal, "This is your new keyboard player..."

Like many, many of the veteran posters/fans here, I'm fairly knowledgeable about the band and its associated facts, trivia, and trivial facts. And don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to sound like an unappreciative prick, I'm really not and I appreciate you taking the time to reply. The part I'm foggy with is what I stated in my OP is all the things that are supposed to have taken place in 1981 and there's no possible or physical way they all could have happened in that short of a time frame.

Damn I wish mgmt. would pull their heads out of their asses and either employ someone to write the bands official biography or allow some of those who have requested access and permission to write an unofficial version with mgmt. having final editing rights but they've have been denied every time with them citing the reason being, "We are currently in the process of setting the wheels in motion to have the band's official biography written and published. Allowing an alternate, unofficial version to co-exist could ultimately do more harm to than good with regards to sales and profits, yada, yada, yada...."

It boggles my mind every time I think about the fact that an entity as large as the business that is Journey with their history and instantly recognizable branding has never released a biography. At this point in the game whomever gets the gig has a massive undertaking ahead of them considering how many years of info have to be assembled, verified, organized, story-written, edited, drafted, approved and finally published. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it!

Thanks for the replies and please, keep 'em coming! :D
