Exactly. He is also NOT BACK but that's the title of this thread.

I don't want to hear someone sound remarkably like him either. There was a time when being a soundalike was a detriment to one's career. This is what karaoke and American Idol breeds - people wanting copycats.

Well, I'm losing a lot of respect for Roger Taylor and this game show he wants to run that will seriously tarnish Queen's legacy at least in my eyes. I have to think Brian May's arm has been twisted in all this judging by his comments a few years ago.

There will always be artists who will copy other artists, some to an extent in which they almost sound and even look like the original artist.
It happens because for those copy/tribute artists it pays the bills.
But this guy was never a tribute band singer, for years he is in a reasonable successful band called "Downhere" a band performing mainly original songs.
Martel knows that there is/was only one Freddie Mercury and he should find his own way,he is talented enough to stand on his own two feet..but damn.. he can do a mean Mercury.
Karaoke,American Idol.. whatever.. the music industry of today sucks..if a Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen had to start their career in this day and age we would probably never heard the great songs they have created.
Ok,this is my last off topic drivel,I`m outta here before I get another kick in the nuts from the "Off Topic Correction Police"

What I'm wondering is where did he get the master tape minus Freddie's lead vocals, the backing is Queen, listen to those layered vocal harmonies, its all studio. The guy can sing but that wasn't live in his bedroom imho.

Is this the Death of originality!! not only in music but movies also, I think it is. I'm lucky to have seen Queen live in the flesh at their peak a couple of times, now I realise just how lucky.

Multi-tracks from many Queen sessions leaked out. I have them all including BR. 9 gigs each as they are all 24 track. You should hear the throw away vox that is left behind on the BR master. Freddie cracks on "Leave me to die" and says FUCK ! Not just something I can upload. Far too large. A circle of people had a stockpile of masters like this and they all leaked. Marvin Gaye's whats going on master is another one that supposedly came from the same leak which I also have.. Google search about it. I am pretty sure some of the multi tracks are up on you tube.

Edit: yep, search for queen multitrack on youtube.

I'm pretty sure that because he is part of the official contest, he got the tracks from the source (i.e. Roger), as all the other contestants would have. Listen to some of the other auditions (except they all suck  )

I have mixed feelings about this. This Marc Martel guy is amazing. You can certainly close your eyes and swear that was Freddie Mercury singing. However, there was much more to replacing Freddie Mercury as a front man of Queen than just his voice. But wow, I'm impressed.

As consumers they have a right to their opinion regardless of what you or Journey may think.
Journey sold us, the consumer, tickets to a show with poor/terrible/fucking awful sound and virtually no new music.
They don't care that I'm dissatisfied/pissed, they are laughing all the way to the bank. ...

I'm gonna bitch my money's worth and I don't really give a second thought as to what you, the non~concert goer/sideline
cheerleader, "Journey has never done anything wrong to their fans ." fan thinks about it.

Jeremey/Frontiers gave me more than my money's worth ...and I could make out the words!!
The bitch from Boston makes a great point ...
you, on the other hand, should always let someone else do your thinking/speaking.

That's three times I've bitched ...2 times in ref to the show ...173 to go!!

I really had no plans to see Journey anymore but Eclipse was a good effort and I also thought that there might be the off chance that they surprise us with their L.A show, sort of like in 2008 with the Anne Wilson/ Arnel duet. Alas, beyond the fireworks show it wasn't meant to be. It's obvious that Arnel and Deen at least want to perform some of the new songs but the powers that be think otherwise. I can't blame anyone for paying to see a tribute act over these guys at the moment because at the very least you'l get to hear a varied setlist. As it's not going to be Steve Perry singing regardless, go with the act that gives you the best value for the buck and for some that is the tribute acts as of late.

Not at contradiction at all. I have no problem with tribute bands. It's when the real band becomes a tribute where I have the problem. I'd actually rather drop 10 or 15 bucks on a tribute show in a club to hear the songs in a live setting than paying top dollar for authorized karaoke.

1. If Journey had a singer who sounded as much like Perry as Marc sounds like Freddie, we would all be stoked.

2. Aside from the ability to sound like Freddie, Marc is a trained vocalist and amazing with his own band.

It's not that he JUST sounds like Mercury. His voice is powerful, clear, un strained, and pitch perfect with depth. I wish we had more singers like this in today's music.

That's what made Perry different to me. It wasn't that he just hit the notes. His voice didn't sound thin like most Perry clones. It was rich and powerful.

You make some very good points. His voice was about as perfect as perfect could get live. You don't see much of that in today's music. I wouldn't mind a collaboration between Marc and Queen on a new album. I'm not as emotionally tied to Queen as I am Journey, so I'm not as apprehensive to the idea of Marc taking over the lead vocalist spot. Plus, knowing Freddy is, obviously, not coming back (being deceased kind of makes that come back a bit difficult) I'm open to having Queen resurrected.

Being on the subject of replacements, Yes is another classic rock band that replaced a monster vocalist. As far as I know, Jon Anderson is still out touring, but I'm not up on the background story of why he is no longer in Yes. But, I mentioned them to say that their new album with vocalist Benoit David, Fly From Here, is absolutely stunning! And of course, the latest Foreigner album with Kelly Hansen is also very good.

I really don't know why it is that when it comes to Journey, I have different thoughts on replacement singers for Steve Perry. I guess as Knox said, what made Perry different was the fact that while there were/are plenty of singers out there who come close to pulling off a good Perry impression, none really can duplicate every aspect of Perry's voice. Steve Augeri had some "Perry" qualities to his vocals which led him to landing the vocalist job. So did Jeff Scott Soto, and now Arnel Pineda. But, none of them can, or have, completely or seamlessly duplicated Perry's vocals in such a way as what Marc has been able to do with Freddy Mercury. And, I suppose I think of the voice in terms as an instrument. Certain bands have certain sounds and styles that give those bands identity. The vocals are as much, sometimes a lot more, responsible for the band's identity as what the guitars, keys, and percussion are. And, for me, even if the replacement singer sounds a lot like the original guy, there will be some differences that will be enough to say "it sounds great, but it's not quite the same." And on the side note, IF I had my choice of singers to replace Steve Perry, Kevin Chalfant has been the only one close enough. But I digress.....

I find discussions on replacement singers fascinating, yet frustrating. I say that because I always feel I'm contradicting myself. I love the fact that bands like Foreigner, Yes, and possibly Queen can bring in replacement singers and sound exactly like the band has always sounded like. But with Journey, I just haven't been able to feel the same way. I have enjoyed their material, "post Perry". But in a lot of ways, it's very different.
